The Henschke Hill of Roses Shiraz 2016 is an exceptional single-vineyard Eden Valley Shiraz crafted from a small parcel within the famed Hill of Grace vineyard. Produced from vines planted in 1989 using a massal selection taken from the original pre-phylloxera Hill of Grace vines, the wine represents a younger yet profoundly expressive interpretation of this legendary site. Named in tribute to Johann Gottlieb Rosenzweig, one of the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers who settled in the region, Hill of Roses reflects both the heritage and meticulous viticulture that define Henschke’s winemaking philosophy. The 2016 vintage was regarded by Stephen Henschke as a deeply coloured, concentrated and energetic season, producing wines of remarkable intensity and ageing potential. Matured in French oak with the precision and restraint characteristic of Henschke, the wine balances richness with extraordinary detail and finesse.
Dark-fruited, savoury and mineral-driven, the 2016 Hill of Roses reveals the unmistakable DNA of Hill of Grace while maintaining its own vibrant identity. Aromatically layered and structurally refined, it delivers notes of blackberry, plum, spice, cocoa and subtle floral lift with exceptional purity. The palate is plush yet controlled, framed by beautifully integrated tannins and vibrant natural acidity that provide both immediacy and long-term cellaring potential. There is remarkable concentration throughout, yet the wine retains elegance and composure rather than sheer power alone. Its seamless texture and lingering finish place it among the finest releases of Hill of Roses to date. Decanting in its youth is highly recommended to allow its depth and complexity to fully emerge. This is a profound Australian Shiraz suited to collectors and enthusiasts seeking a refined expression of Eden Valley terroir.

“This vintage has some serious concentration. Even a touch burly. Ripe and plush – it does seem that Stephen’s thoughts on the 2016 vintage being a little more plush than some are spot on. Flavours of chocolate, florals, black fruits, coffee beans, possibly a touch of five-spice? This has very fine tannins. Length which maintains its intensity. This wine surely has a good fifteen to twenty years ahead of it and is a really fine Hill of Roses. For me, 96 and that will surely rise over time.”
“Also just released, the Henschke Shiraz Eden Valley Hill of Roses 2016 is a wine made from a section of the Hill of Grace vineyard that was planted in 1989 to Prue Henschke's massale selection of the best vines selected from the old vine parcels. Each year this wine closes the gap on Hill of Grace, and this 2016 is an excellent release.”
Henschke is one of Australia's most prestigious and historic wineries, with over 153 years and six generations of family ownership. Located in Keyneton, South Australia, within the renowned Eden Valley wine region, Henschke has built a legacy of crafting premium wines, including its iconic single-vineyard wines, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone. Since 1862, the Henschke family has cultivated exceptional vineyards in the Eden Valley, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide Hills, with a focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation.
Stephen and Prue Henschke, the fifth-generation winemaker and viticulturist team, have led the winery since 1979, restoring native vegetation and adopting organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The sixth generation, led by Johann Henschke, continues to honour the traditions of the past while embracing modern winemaking techniques to ensure Henschke remains a leader in fine wine production.
Henschke's commitment to sustainability and excellence has garnered numerous accolades, including the Wine Enthusiast's New World Winery of the Year (2021) and the Halliday Wine Companion's Winery of the Year. The winery has also been recognised with the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, highlighting its dedication to environmentally conscious practices.
Henschke’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard. The winery has embraced organic and biodynamic farming practices, ensuring the health of the vines and the land for future generations. By working with nature rather than against it, they produce wines that are not only reflective of the place but also allow the true expression of the fruit to come through. The family’s attention to detail, commitment to quality, and respect for the environment have resulted in a portfolio of wines that have gained worldwide recognition for their excellence.
