Structure, savoury depth and dark-fruited precision define By Farr Farrside Pinot Noir 2024, a distinctive single-site Pinot Noir from the Farr family’s estate in Bannockburn, Geelong. The Farrside vineyard sits on a northeast-facing slope and is composed of limestone topped with black volcanic soil, giving the wine a darker and more mineral expression than the estate’s Sangreal vineyard. Planted in 2001, the vineyard is laid out east to west to help protect the fruit from excessive sun exposure. The clonal selection includes 114, 115, 777, 667 and MV6, contributing layers of perfume, fruit depth and structural complexity. Although Farrside is only around 300 metres from Sangreal, its darker soils and cooler growing conditions mean the fruit is typically harvested 10 to 12 days later than the estate’s other Pinot Noir parcels. This slower ripening contributes to the wine’s firmer frame, savoury tone and more masculine character.

The 2024 vintage at By Farr was shaped by a mild growing season, timely vineyard support and a warm finish that allowed the reds to develop concentration, character and poise. The fruit is hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation in open-top fermenters. Between 40 and 50 per cent of the fruit is stemmed, followed by a four-day cold soak before natural yeast fermentation. Gentle pigeage is carried out two to three times daily, depending on the level of extraction required. The wine is then transferred by gravity into 50 to 60 per cent new Allier oak barrels, where it completes secondary fermentation before extended maturation. In the glass, Farrside Pinot Noir 2024 shows a balanced array of red and black fruits, layered with spice, mineral detail, savoury complexity and fine structural tension. It is firm yet delicate, with the depth and length to reward careful cellaring while retaining the freshness and character that define the site.
