Rarity, heritage, and distinctive varietal expression define this unique Clare Valley release from Wendouree. The Muscat of Alexandria NV (2016, 2017, 2018 blend) is produced from old, dry-grown vines in Clare Valley, reflecting Wendouree’s deeply traditional approach to viticulture and winemaking. This multi-vintage blend brings together three consecutive years, allowing the wine to achieve greater balance, depth, and complexity than a single vintage expression. Unlike the more common fortified Muscat styles of Australia, this wine is made as a non-fortified sweet wine, showcasing the pure character of the Muscat of Alexandria grape.

In the glass, the wine displays a bright golden hue, indicative of both ripeness and concentration. The aromatic profile is highly expressive, offering lifted floral notes alongside rich grapey and citrus elements. On the palate, the wine is textural and gently viscous, with a natural sweetness balanced by fresh acidity. There is a clarity and precision to the fruit, supported by a subtle richness that builds through the mid-palate. The blend of vintages contributes to a layered and harmonious structure, with each component adding nuance and depth. This is a distinctive and contemplative wine, offering both immediate appeal and the ability to evolve further in bottle.

      Trusted by the professionals

The Wendouree Muscat of Alexandria is a deliciously perfumed, sweet wine with vibrant freshness, lovely spice, and a silvery line of bitterness. With bottle age, the youthful angularity settles into harmony.

      — Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Surprisingly delicate and fresh, with a lovely clean finish. Not excessively sweet, instead refreshing with fruits and florals.

      — Jeremy Pollard, Delectable

It’s always vibrant and fresh, with a deceptive lightness that gives way to depth and length.

      — Wine Decoded

      Wendouree

Wendouree has remained one of the quiet benchmarks of Australian wine since the vineyard was first planted in 1893 by Alfred Percy Birks. Today, Tony and Lita Brady continue the estate’s deeply traditional approach, preserving a style shaped by old vines, low-intervention viticulture, and an unwavering connection to place. Situated on an easterly ridge on the northern edge of South Australia’s Clare Valley, the unirrigated vineyards are rooted in shallow red loam over limestone, conditions that naturally limit yields and intensify concentration.

The estate’s oldest Shiraz vines, many dating back to the original 1893 plantings, are believed to contain genetic material linked to the historic James Busby collection. These low-yielding vines produce small berries with thick skins and high seed content, giving Wendouree wines their structure, depth, and longevity. In the winery, the approach remains deliberately restrained and largely laissez-faire, allowing vineyard character and seasonal variation to define each release rather than heavy-handed winemaking.

Despite the estate’s standing among Australia’s most revered producers, older bottles remain remarkably scarce. Until 1974, Wendouree wines were sold in bulk to merchants for bottling and distribution, meaning many early wines were blended or released without estate labelling. That rarity has only deepened the reputation of Wendouree Shiraz, now regarded as one of the country’s most distinctive and enduring expressions of old-vine Australian Shiraz.
