Sullivans Cove French Oak has become a legend. This is one of the most sought-after whiskies in the world, and the style that put the Australian whisky industry on the map after winning World’s Best at the World Whiskies Awards in 2014, and again in 2019. Aged in French Oak ex-Tawny barrels, this whisky embodies the coming together of Sullivans Cove Distillery and our powerhouse Australian fortified wine industry with rich flavours of Christmas spice, chocolate, and dark dried fruits. As a single cask bottling, every tiny batch is different, expressing the unique characteristics of each barrel.
Aged for 10 years, 5 months, in a 300 litre, French oak ex-Tawny cask, TD0409 is a classic example of the Sullivans Cove French Oak ex-Tawny style. Bottled unflocked and unfiltered at 47.1% abv this cask produced a mere 359 bottles. An array of rich fruit and flavour, heightened by sea spray characters that come so effortless to Sullivans Cove. TD0409 masterfully blends savoury undertones and firm oak structure. From the musky and forest floor notes to the juicy fruit-laden palate and lingering finish of mandarin and Madeira, TD0409 is tremendous.

Founded in 1994 in Hobart, Tasmania, Sullivans Cove Distillery has established itself as a pioneer in the world of single malt whisky. With a focus on creating the finest expressions of Tasmanian whisky, Sullivans Cove has garnered global recognition, including being named World’s Best Whisky three times in 2014, 2018, and 2019. The distillery's success lies in its dedication to small-batch production, using only 100% Tasmanian ingredients and traditional distilling methods.
Operating in one of the most pristine environments for whisky production, Sullivans Cove distillery uses the region’s pure, clean water and fertile barley-growing land to craft its exceptional whiskies. From the unique Tasmanian-built pot still known as "Myrtle" to the bespoke barrel maturation process, every aspect of Sullivans Cove’s production reflects the distillery’s commitment to excellence.
Sullivans Cove is rooted in the belief that whisky should never be rushed. With each cask nurtured to its natural peak, the distillery's philosophy embraces patience, precision, and quality. By using only the finest Tasmanian malted barley and pure local water, Sullivans Cove produces a whisky that is unique to its environment.
The distillery’s commitment to producing world-class whiskies is reflected in its small-batch, single cask approach, where no two batches are the same. This dedication to craftsmanship, paired with the natural elements of Tasmania, allows Sullivans Cove to create whiskies with unparalleled depth and character. Their focus on minimal intervention and maximum expression means each bottle tells a story of its own, embodying the subtleties and complexities of its unique terroir.
Vibrant and with aromatic oak presenting as antique furniture, incense, and Autumn leaves. As it opens in the glass, the spirit and ex-Tawny pre-fill come forward through the oak with a beautifully integrated array of fruity and briny notes: bonito flakes, blackberry syrup, orange pulp and more berries. Dates, cacao nibs, candied orange peel and fresh orange provide depth and carry a smooth transition to the palate.
Palate Very quickly characterised by a wave of tight tannin; Tawny and oak-forward for just a moment, and then an explosive, bright and juicy fruit profile presents peaches in syrup, orange cordial and raspberry jam. A divine vanilla syrup note mingles with a savoury base element (bran cereal, and bonito flakes again), as clove and aniseed point back to the spirit character. Rose, sticky date pudding and fruit mince pies linger on the back palate.
A beautifully long and layered finish presents mandarin, musk and nutmeg. Red dates and Madeira come next - incredibly rich and earthy, classic Tawny influence - and lots of liquorice mingles with notes of raisins and orange cake. Vanilla musk echoes throughout.
