Rockford Rod & Spur Shiraz Cabernet 2012
When Robert O'Callaghan was growing up in the wine business, most of the great reds were made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The blend was his first choice when he started Rockford but the demand for Basket Press Shiraz meant that there weren't enough grapes to go around. After three vintages he stopped making the label. 15 years later he got to have another crack at this very Australian wine.
Each year their growers hand prune through the Barossa winter ensuring the traditional Rod & Spur method is never lost. As the wine slips across your palate and you taste a little frost before sunshine - think of the pruners.
Full box of liquorice allsorts here, along with aniseed, coal, blackcurrant, beeswax and new leather. Medium to full bodied, sweet uptake of raspberry and blackcurrant pastille, a little salty beef flavour, fine grained tannin, fresh acidity and a cool mint laced finish, with a gentle tug of tannin to close. Should age beautifully. - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
