Traditional Barossa blending, old-vine heritage and savoury complexity define this distinctive Rhône-inspired red from one of Australia's most revered family-owned wineries. The Rockford Moppa Springs Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2022 is sourced from the dry northern Barossa districts of Moppa Springs, Ebenezer and Kalimna, areas renowned for producing intensely flavoured fruit under challenging growing conditions. These historic vineyards have endured for more than 150 years, with generations of growers preserving varieties that have become integral to the Barossa’s winemaking identity. Grenache forms the heart of the blend, supported by the structure of Mataro and the spice and depth of Shiraz. The fruit is processed using Rockford’s traditional equipment, including an 1880s wooden Bagshaw de-stemmer, open slate fermenters and a historic Robinson basket press.

Following fermentation, the individual components are matured in seasoned oak casks before blending, allowing the wine to develop harmony, texture and complexity. The 2022 vintage reflects both the resilience of the vineyard sites and Rockford’s commitment to preserving traditional Barossa winemaking practices. Rich yet restrained, the wine balances generous fruit with savoury undertones, fine tannins and vibrant freshness. Layers of spice, earth and dark berry fruit unfold across the palate, creating a wine that is approachable in its youth yet capable of rewarding further bottle age. It is an excellent partner to slow-cooked lamb, grilled meats, charcuterie and hearty Mediterranean cuisine.
