      Product Description:
Perfumed cool-climate fruit, savoury complexity and a distinctive silky texture define the Ravensworth Estate Shiraz Viognier 2023. Produced from Ravensworth’s estate vineyard in Murrumbateman, the wine reflects the elevated, cool-growing conditions of the Canberra District. The blend comprises 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier, following the northern Rhône tradition of fermenting the two varieties together. Although used in a relatively small proportion, the Viognier contributes to the wine’s texture, aromatic lift and overall sense of harmony. The Viognier is incorporated primarily to influence the palate rather than simply adding overt floral perfume.

The grapes were co-fermented with approximately 20% whole bunches in open-top fermenters. The fermenting fruit was plunged daily and remained on its skins for between three and six weeks, allowing flavour, colour and fine tannins to develop gradually. Following fermentation, the wine matured for one year in French oak barriques, of which approximately 20% were new. It was then transferred to large-format foudre for a further year of maturation, helping the components integrate while limiting excessive oak influence. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural texture and vineyard character. The 2023 release is highly aromatic, displaying red fruits, florals, white pepper and cool herbal spice. Its medium-bodied palate combines supple fruit with lively acidity, fine tannins and a savoury mineral edge. Raspberry, red cherry and blueberry flavours mingle with pepper, dried herbs, violet and subtle earthy notes. The finish is fresh, finely structured and persistent, with a silky texture that remains one of the wine’s defining characteristics. While already expressive and composed, Ravensworth recommends a cellaring window of approximately seven to ten years.

      Reviews & Accolades
“Medium purple-ruby in appearance, with white pepper spice on the nose for days... Fruit too: red cherry, redcurrant, blueberry, violet florals, herbal notes, hints of menthol. It's medium-bodied in a classical cool-climate way, with juicy weight and grip and a juniper spice thread. Layers and layers of texture and interest. It's light on its feet and an excellent choice for the Australian summer.” — Melissa Moore, The Real Review, 95 Points

“A subtle, spicy, slick red of washy raspberry fruit character, wet leaf and undergrowth characters, some brambly blackberry notes, white mushroom, black pepper and peppery sage leaf characters. It feels like viognier is a very back note here, the vintage out and proud in diffuse nature and spread of flavours, plus the greenery found here, but in all that, a kind of pinosity, pleasing swish of texture and cool finish.” — Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, 92 Points
