Pooley Cooinda Vale J.R.D. Syrah 2024 is a distinguished cool-climate expression from the winery’s prestigious Heritage Range. The fruit is sourced from the Cooinda Vale Vineyard at Campania in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Established in 1985, Cooinda Vale is a sheltered, north-east-facing site positioned approximately 80 to 100 metres above sea level. Its Syrah vines grow across shallow sandy clay loams over impervious clay, with areas of black cracking clay found toward the northern section of the vineyard. The site’s relatively shallow soils restrict deep root growth and access to water and nutrients, creating moderate vine stress that Pooley associates with delicacy and finesse in the resulting wines. The Coal River Valley’s maritime-influenced continental climate provides warm, sunny days, cool nights and an extended ripening period that supports gradual flavour and tannin development. 

The 2024 J.R.D. Syrah is presented as a full-bodied red wine, combining aromatic lift with firm structure and measured freshness. Its bouquet is led by white pepper, bramble and violets, creating a fragrant and distinctly cool-climate profile. White pepper continues across the palate, where firm tannins and clean acidity provide balance, definition and complexity. The wine possesses a lingering character and has been crafted with the structure required for extended development in bottle. At 14% alcohol, it retains composure and freshness while delivering the concentration expected of Pooley’s Heritage Range. The wine records a pH of 3.65, titratable acidity of 6.2 grams per litre and no measurable residual sugar, reinforcing its dry and precisely structured style.
