Power, perfume and remarkable site expression define this exceptional Tasmanian Pinot Noir from one of the Coal River Valley’s most distinguished vineyards. The Pooley Butcher’s Hill Oronsay Pinot Noir 2024 is sourced exclusively from the Butcher’s Hill Vineyard, a site renowned for producing Pinot Noir of depth, structure and age-worthy complexity. As part of Pooley’s prestigious Oronsay range, the wine is crafted from carefully selected parcels and produced only in vintages that meet the estate’s highest standards. High proportions of whole-bunch fermentation and meticulous barrel selection contribute layers of aromatic complexity and textural refinement.
The unique combination of dolerite-rich soils and Tasmania’s cool climate allows the fruit to develop intensity while retaining freshness and precision. Aromas of dark cherry, wild strawberry, exotic spice and black tea unfold alongside earthy undertones that are characteristic of the vineyard. The palate balances richness with elegance, supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity that provide structure and persistence. The 2024 vintage captures both the power and sophistication for which Butcher’s Hill has become known, delivering a Pinot Noir of impressive character and longevity. Equally compelling in its youth or after careful cellaring, it is a superb companion to duck, game birds, mushroom dishes and refined cuisine.

“Textural and harmonious on the palate, with a core of beautiful ripe plum and cherry fruit, fine, rocky tannins and an elegant composition and flow.”
“Cherry, a deep earthy thing, exotic clove and ginger spice, almond and black tea perfume. It’s fleshy and supple, lovely fine-grained tannin, a minty and sooty feel, cherry and almond paste, balanced acidity, with a sweet cherry and orange finish of excellent length. Such a lovely wine. The earthy character and tang sets it apart from most Australian Pinot Noir. Just saying.”
Pooley Wines, established in 1985 by Denis and Margaret Pooley, is a family-owned vineyard that has grown to become one of Australia’s most acclaimed cool-climate wine producers. Situated in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, the winery has flourished under the stewardship of three generations, with John Pooley expanding the estate by adding the Butcher’s Hill Vineyard in 2003. Today, John’s daughter Anna Pooley, an award-winning winemaker, leads the production with an eye toward tradition and innovation. Her meticulous approach to winemaking honours the family’s legacy while elevating Pooley Wines to new heights of excellence. Recognised as the 2023 Winery of the Year by Halliday Wine Companion, Pooley’s commitment to quality and family values is evident in every bottle.
Pooley Wines’ philosophy is simple: to create wines that genuinely express the land, climate, and vintage from which they come. With a focus on sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the winemaking process, Pooley Wines allows the natural character of the fruit to shine through. The family’s dedication to crafting wines that balance elegance, complexity, and innovation is at the core of their approach. By embracing the rhythm of the vineyard and working with the challenges each vintage presents, Pooley Wines produces wines that are both distinctive and timeless, a true reflection of Tasmania’s unique terroir.
