Founded by Luigi Einaudi, during his time as Governor of Banca d’Italia and President of Italy after the second world war, it is said he never missed a harvest! His son Roberto succeeded him, but it was Roberto’s daughter Paola, on her return from Milano to Dogliani at the end of the 1980s, who with tenacity, enthusiasm and significant investment, re-launched this historic brand and went about improving wine quality.
Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is the result of an accurate selection of grapes from the Einaudi vineyard located at Barolo, in the zone Terlo. A great wine of the Langa, garnet red with a shade of amber, of intense and embracing fragrance, full bodied but smooth tannic taste, with a long spiced final taste. Derived from the Nebbiolo grapes from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard owned by the Einaudi estate, facing Barolo. The tannic characteristics guarantee a long life in bottle. With time it acquires complexity as the ethereal aromas of spices, truffles and leather.
Medium-light brick-red with a bouquet of meaty, rusty metal and slightly sweaty aromas. It's quite lean, not a big wine but nicely balanced and well supplied with supple, fleshy tannins. There's not a great lot of detail at this juncture, while it has intensity and length, the drying savoury tannins appropriately balanced. - Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 30 September, 2022, 93 Points
