Precision, restraint and remarkable mineral intensity define the Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2024. First released in 1998 from the 1995 vintage, Yattarna was created through one of Australia’s most extensive white-wine development programmes. A total of 144 experimental wines were produced before the final style was selected, with the internal designation Bin 144 acknowledging this pioneering process. Its name means “little by little, gradually,” reflecting the patient evolution of Penfolds’ flagship Australian Chardonnay. The 2024 release draws fruit from the cool-climate regions of Tumbarumba, the Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. These distinct vineyard areas were selected to contribute natural acidity, fine structure and detailed fruit expression to the finished wine.

Cool and generally mild conditions characterised the 2024 growing season across all three sourcing regions. Variable spring weather moderated yields, while the absence of prolonged summer heat allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The extended growing period preserved natural acidity and encouraged purity, tension and structural precision at harvest. The wine was matured for eight months in French oak barriques, comprising 56% new oak and 24% one-year-old oak. Bright pale gold with a green hue, it opens with flint, slate, wet stone, oyster shell and sea-spray notes alongside pistachio nougat, roasted macadamia, almond, brioche and restrained oak spice. The palate is finely controlled and mineral-driven, combining lemon-curd creaminess with sea salt, caper and oceanic savouriness. Bright acidity and skin-derived phenolics provide an authoritative structure, while the alcohol and oak remain exceptionally discreet. Powerful without heaviness, this is a poised and enduring expression with a Penfolds-recommended peak drinking window of 2027 to 2047.

A vein of sparkling-water freshness and slate-like minerality runs through its core. It is undoubtedly a nervy Chardonnay, with pointy acidity gradually rolling across the palate, “little by little,” as the cuvée name implies, leaving the tongue with the sensation of a silk glove. The back palate remains rather restrained, where fruit and the developing flavours derived from winemaking regroup and slowly, but surely, emerge. Built to last and evolve gradually, yattarna.

      — Lisa Cardelli, Winepilot, 98 Points

Pale colour. Fresh grapefruit, lemon curd, lanolin, tonic water aromas with flinty notes. Bittersweet and textured with pure grapefruit, lemon glacé flavours, fine chalky bittersweet textures, attractive mid-palate volume and fresh long indelible acidity. Finishes al-dente/ chalky and minerally. Lovely energy and flow.

      — Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal, 97 Points

This is a stony, pebbly, amazingly linear and resonant Yattarna, this remarkable thing about this vintage is that it starts strongly, with epic fruit notes, ginger, oak and amazing crunch, and then manages to maintain this volume of flavour for minutes. It doesn’t dip or meander for a second. The finish, which seems never to truly resolve, is heroic and the acidity, which does an incredible job of transporting the fruit perfectly down the tracks, is all-powerful, and it is likely to protect this wine for decades. I cannot remember a finer first-taste of Yattarna.

      Penfolds

Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.
