With the release of the 1995 vintage in 1998, Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay was developed from on of the most comprehensive, focused and highly publicised wine development projects ever conducted in Australia. The independence and aspiration across generations of Penfolds winemakers inspired the winery to embark on a program to create a white wine that stands alongside Grange. The fruit used in this Chardonnay has been selectively sourced from the only the very best cool-climate regions, combined with sensitive winemaking. Yattarna reflects Penfolds patience and continued commitment to its original goal, its very name being drawn from the Aboriginal language, meaning ‘little by little, gradually.’
The 2013 vintage is a very pale straw colour with lime green hues. The nose initially has aromas of slate and wet stone with hints of light roasted almonds. Subtle nots of citrus come through with nectarine and nashi pear fruits. This wine needs a moment in the glass for palate to open up and unfurl the myriad of layered complexities hidden beneath. Along with a spiced multi-citrus compoté, lurks an acidity that is not immediately apparent, but it’s there.
