Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2000

The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the internal name given to the project when development first began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a ‘trial’, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its has a fleshy and opulent style, contrasting with Grange, which is more assertive and muscular. RWT is produce from fruit primarily selected for its plush texture and aromatic qualities. The resulting wine helping to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level. RWT wines area built for the long haul, with the precision, concentration and balance to age for many years.

After a dry winter and cool conditions at fruit set, moderate conditions for ripening were temporarily disrupted by a hot spell in late January. Some excellent shiraz was harvested from the best-managed vineyards showing the Barossa's hallmark fruit sweetness and ripe tannin structure. The 2000 vintage will produce wines with fruit intensity and power, in a more forward style than normal.
