Penfolds Bin 389 was first produced in 1960 and quickly established a reputation as the ‘Poor man's Grange’. Made from a blend of 54% Cabernet and 46% Shiraz, the wine was matured for twelve months in 22% new, one year old, and older American oak hogsheads.Opaque crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Perfumed nose of spice, violets, blackcurrant and blackberry. The palate is generous and full bodied with fine dry tannin backbone. Flavours of ripe blackcurrant, liquorice and spice over a vanillin oak background. Perfect balance, with very long aftertaste.
Powerful but silky smooth; elegance and fruit freshness beyond the normal, black fruits running through the length of the palate; ripe tannins, restrained oak. Another testament to 2002. - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion, Published 20 July 2011, 94 Points
