Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey is the perfect combination between proof and age. This full-bodied, sweet whisky has been described by some as “nectar” and colloquially referred to as "Lot B". The composition 70% Corn, 16% Wheat, 14% Barley mash, medium proof and 12 years of aging seems just right for a pleasant drink of whisky.  This fine bourbon can compete with any excellent cognac as an after-dinner sipper. The overall impression is rich and deep.

The bouquet is somewhat lacking in “grip” with initial aromas of peanuts and peanut butter; following aeration the bouquet turns more like fibre/textile. Entry is long, oily, remarkably substantial, and maple sweet; midpalate features tastes of light fudge, maple, chocolate covered orange, caramel and honey. Finish is elegant and sturdy.

A perfect combination of age and proof. The 12 years of aging and medium proof of 90.4 seem to be just right in creating a very pleasant drink of whiskey. This fine bourbon can compete with any excellent cognac as an after-dinner drink.

    Van Winkle

Van Winkle Bourbon Whiskey is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey produced by the Sazerac Company at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This production arrangement by Buffalo Trace Distillery was the result of a joint venture arrangement with the Van Winkle family that who established their brand in May 2002. This transition was seamless, with Buffalo Trace producing the Van Winkle bourbons, using Pappy’s exact recipe. This change allows Old Rip Van Winkle to maintain their exacting standards while producing more barrels for future enjoyment. And yet demand continues to outpace supply with each release. Only 7,000 cases of Old Rip Van Winkle and Pappy Van Winkle are produced for the world annually!

There have been four generations of Van Winkles working for the brand starting with the pioneer who established the Van Winkle juggernaut in the latter part of the 19th century; Julian P ‘Pappy’ Van Winkle Sr. Working as a salesman for the alcohol wholesaler W L Weller and Sons in Louisville, Kentucky and with the help of his friend, Alex Farnsley – acquired the business along with the Stitzel Distillery. They merged the two businesses to form the Stitzel-Weller Distillery producing such bourbons as Old Fitzgerald and W L Weller. Later, Pappy Van Winkle’s son Julian Jr managed the business following his father’s death in 1965 and created a new brand in the pre-Prohibition style, using whiskey stocks he had wisely kept by from the previous distillery. Julian Jr’s son Julian III ran the operation from 1981 following his father’s death and continued the brand. Then Julian Van Winkle III’s son Preston joined in 2001 moving all production to the Buffalo Trace Distillery.
