Mountadam Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Established in the early 1970’s Mountadam has been family owned and operated since 2005, long recognised as one of the very finest producers in the Eden Valley, Mountadam wines show a real sense of place while maintaining high drinkability and character.

Defined by its cool climate, ancient soils and later ripening, Eden Valley wines are distinctive in their character, displaying wonderful aromatics, elegance, complexity and finesse. It sits within geographical zone of Barossa. Whilst being part of the Barossa zone, Eden Valley vineyards sit at higher altitutudes (380-600 metres above sea level) than most Barossa vineyards.

Mountadam Vineyards Eden Valley range is an expression of the purity of cool climate varietals from Estate plantings. Eden Valley Cabernet is greatly underrated showing lovely florals of violets, dark brambly fruits and fine supple tannins. Harvested from block 24 on 30th of April and block 38 on the 1st May from the Estates eastern side. The fruit was harvested in the cool of the night and harvested using a selective destemming harvester and fermented in 5 tonne and 10 tonne open fermenters after cold soaking for 2 days prior to fermentation. The wine was then matured in 60% new tight grain French oak barriques and 40% 1-2-year-old tight grain French oak barriques.

Mountadam is doing very good things when it comes to shaping plush, contemporary-styled wines from their vineyards way up in the High Eden (at around 550m above sea level). The fruit purity on display is really something and there is a balance here, despite the higher alcohol level. Ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of briar, dried citrus blossom, roast capsicum, fine spice and cedar all come into play with fine, self-assured tannins and lacy acidity finishing long and bright. - Dave Brookes
