Massolino Barolo 2016
Want to know what the Barolo fuss is about? Why people go nuts about Nebbiolo? Here’s one wine that shows the beauty of what Jancis Robinson describes as ‘the world’s most tantalising grape’ in its purest form. Using fruit from Serralunga d’Alba Massolino delivers Barolo that is graceful, vibrant, classical. Big oak and extended time on skins, old school, but not old fashioned. One for the cellar, and a great introduction to Barolo.
It’s a beautiful and finely wrought expression of Barolo. Red fruits, flowers, some sweet spices, liquorice root. Medium-bodied, clear and bright, a fine dusting of tannin, some spice and dried herb, and a cool and precise finish of good length. It’s not, perhaps, the longest of most intense of wines, but it lays on the charm so convincingly. And, I suspect, there’s a bit more goodness to be let out of the bottle. - Gary Walsh, Wine Front, 93+ points
