Product Description:
Tignanello redefined—power meets finesse in modern Chianti Classico. Marchesi Antinori’s Tignanello 2020 stands as a milestone in Italian viticulture. Crafted as one of the first Chianti Classico wines to break free from white grapes and aged in barriques, Tignanello now blends tradition with modernity. This vintage features 80 % Sangiovese rounded by 15 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 5 % Cabernet Franc, sourced from Antinori’s carefully tended vineyards on marl-rich calcareous soils.
The 2020 season was marked by warm, dry summer conditions followed by tempering September rains—conditions that encouraged optimal phenolic maturity while preserving structure. Harvested and gravity-fed into fermentation vessels, fruit was hand-selected and macerated to achieve balanced extraction. After malolactic fermentation, the wine spent 18 months in French oak before being blended and further refined in barrel, creating a wine of density and poise.
This is Tignanello in full stride: rich dark cherry and berry fruit meld with floral violet lift, cocoa, coffee and a well-integrated tannin structure. It’s refined but expressive, built for both now and years ahead.
The Maker
Tenuta Tignanello sits at the heart of Chianti Classico, where the Greve and Pesa river valleys cut through gently rolling hills. The estate spans 319 hectares, with 165 planted to vines, anchored by its two celebrated slopes: Tignanello and Solaia. These sites, defined by Pliocene-era soils of limestone, schist, and marine marlstone, are the cradle of some of Italy’s most influential wines.
The Antinori family has worked these hillsides for generations, first releasing Solaia in 1978. The initial blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc soon gave way to the introduction of Sangiovese, shaping the distinctive character of the wine as it is known today. Produced only in exceptional vintages, Solaia is a measured act of restraint and ambition, with a legacy that continues to set the benchmark for contemporary Tuscan winemaking.
Philosophy
At Tenuta Tignanello, wine is approached as an enduring conversation between site and season. The estate’s vineyards are managed with precision and patience, recognising that the interplay of altitude, soil composition, and the Chianti climate is what defines their singular expression.
Solaia and Tignanello are more than flagship wines; they represent a continuous pursuit of balance and refinement. For Marchesi Antinori, each vintage is both challenge and passion — an exploration of tradition guided by innovation, with the vineyard itself always at the centre.
