Product Description:
A Grand Cru tribute to time, terroir, and the visionary behind it all.
Maison Mumm’s RSRV Cuvée Lalou 2008 is a Champagne of remarkable pedigree, crafted in homage to René Lalou, the man who helped redefine the estate’s vineyard philosophy. Drawn from seven of Mumm’s finest Grand Cru plots—split evenly between the chalky Côte des Blancs and the powerful Montagne de Reims—this vintage cuvée showcases the estate’s deepest expression of place and patience.
Vinified plot by plot and aged a full ten years on lees, the 2008 vintage is bold yet finely chiselled. Buttered brioche and roasted citrus meet quince, hazelnut, and wild herbs, wrapped in a golden hue and a tensile chalky grip. It’s both generous and tightly structured, with a long, sapid finish. Disgorged in late 2021 and dosed at just 6g/L, this is Grand Cru Champagne for purists and collectors alike.
Drink now with air or cellar confidently to 2035+. Match with duck rillettes, roast veal, or lobster risotto.
The Maker
Maison Mumm’s foundations date back to the mid‑19th century, firmly rooted in the Côte des Blancs but with fingerprints across the top terroirs of Champagne. The house winemakers take a meticulous and consistent approach, marrying traditional techniques like long bottle ageing and disgorgement with modern precision in temperature control and lees contact. Every decision, from selecting base wines to choosing the dosage, is driven by a century-old commitment to quality and structure.
Maison Mumm has been part of Champagne’s fabric since 1827, but its winemaking roots stretch back to the Rhine Valley in 1761. Founded by the Mumm brothers—Jacobus, Gottlieb and Philipp—the house quickly established itself in Reims with a singular commitment to quality. Georges Hermann Mumm, who later gave the house its iconic name, cemented that ethos with the motto: “Only the best.”
Today, Maison Mumm controls over 218 hectares of vineyards, with an impressive 160 hectares classified as Grands Crus across villages like Aÿ, Bouzy, Avize and Cramant. Pinot Noir forms the structural core of most wines, while Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs adds tension and precision. The house also pioneered vineyard-side pressing as early as the 1840s, ensuring fruit integrity from the moment of harvest.
Their winemaking blends old-world structure with modern clarity. Careful blending, controlled fermentations, and extensive ageing define a house style that’s as rigorous as it is expressive. With over 190 years of uninterrupted production, Mumm continues to champion a legacy of precision and progress in every bottle.
Philosophy
Maison Mumm’s philosophy is built around one uncompromising idea: terroir must speak clearly, and only the best will do. That mantra has shaped the house for nearly two centuries. From Grand Cru sourcing to grower partnerships, vineyard management is hands-on and transparent. The result? A house style that leans into chalk-driven minerality, structure from Pinot Noir, and brightness through Chardonnay.
Innovation has always walked hand-in-hand with tradition. Mumm was one of the first Champagne houses to press grapes directly in the vineyard, and among the earliest to favour grape partnerships over buying unfermented must. These decisions weren’t just technical—they were philosophical. Control from vine to bottle was, and remains, the only way to guarantee purity.
More than just a Champagne brand, Mumm has been a cultural presence. From Foujita’s bespoke rose artwork to “Cordon Rouge” becoming shorthand for quality, the house has fused art, history, and winemaking without losing sight of its core pursuit: making Champagne that’s honest, enduring, and unmistakably Grand Cru.
