Maison Louis Jadot controls over 150 hectares of vineyards in Burgundy, of which 70 hectares lie in the Côte d’Or: Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot, Domaine Louis Jadot, Domaine Gagey and Domaine du Duc de Magenta. Established in 1859 by Louis Henri Denis Jadot, succeeding generations continued to develop the House until the sale to Rudi Kopf ’s company Kobrand in 1985. The injection of capital saw big investment in vineyard acquisition including Chateau des Jacques in Beaujolais and the Cadus Tonnellerie.
The Grands Crus of Gevrey Chambertin are located on a gentle east-facing slope in the southern part of the town. The soil is limestone in depth and clayey on the surface, which gives the wines both their power and their roundness. The grapes, characterized by very black berries, are destemmed and vinified in open vats for about 4 weeks, thus fully revealing all the subtlety of this terroir. After devatting, the wines are barreled in oak barrels in Jadot's cellars, and aged for 18 months. This wine pairs well with roasted salmon, roast chicken, grilled red meats - beef, lamb chop, osso bucco, stew, stew, beef bourguignon, duck, quail, partridge, teppanyaki beef, venison, wild boar, mashed potatoes with salted butter.
Jadot’s 0.4 hectares of this prized site lies near the top of the slope and densely planted (10,000 vines/ha). The 2018 came in at 14 percent alcohol, reflecting a rare level of ripeness, but nonetheless, displays marvelous acidity, which keeps the wine full of energy. Long and precise, this is a brilliantly balanced wine that shows why the site is so revered. Though packed with flavour, it is light on the palate, which is my definition of Burgundy - flavour without weight. Drinking Window 2026 - 2036. - decanter.com, 98 Points
