Cretan tsikoudia, also known as raki, has a long and storied history that dates back thousands of years. Evidence of its production can be found in the charred remains of grape bunches and seeds discovered in the ancient palace of Phaistos, showcasing its existence in Minoan times. Derived from the word tsikouda, which refers to the residues of the winemaking process, tsikoudia stands out among other distillates due to its unique production method. It is created solely by distilling pure tsikouda, without any additional aromatic additives, resulting in a potent spirit with alcohol content ranging from 35% to 60%. This makes it one of the strongest spirits available. Tsikoudia is a translucent and robust alcoholic beverage that is primarily produced and consumed in Crete. It is a traditional Greek spirit that holds deep cultural significance. Its roots can be traced back to the ancient Minoan civilization, where it was enjoyed alongside meals and favoured by the Minoans. Today, tsikoudia is enjoyed as an aperitif or digestif, known for its smooth yet fiery character.

Tsikoudia is a distilled Cretan spirit deriving from high-quality grapes. It takes time for the process to complete, which only adds to the whole experience. Vineyards are located in Kato Asites village within the district of Malevizio. What makes grapes so delicious is a combination of things. The distinct weather conditions feature abundant sunlight and mild temperatures by the sea throughout the year. The special soil properties enriched with clay ensures the ideal conditions in viticulture. After the grape harvest and alcoholic fermentation, it is that time of the year when distillation takes place. Grapes boil slowly in a sealable metal cauldron called “kazani”.
