Product Description:
The Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2024 is a rare, highly selected sweet Riesling from one of the Middle Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. It comes from Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a southwest-facing VDP.GROSSE LAGE® situated on exceptionally steep slopes across the Mosel River from the village of Wehlen. The vineyard rises at gradients of approximately 60 to 100 percent, with vines rooted in weathered Devonian slate and a high proportion of exposed rock. Its prolonged sunlight, heat-retaining slate and proximity to the river create conditions that support slow ripening, aromatic development and pronounced mineral expression. Joh. Jos. Prüm’s technical information describes the site as the estate’s most famous vineyard, characterised by deep, weathered grey slate soils, a south-southwest exposure and slopes reaching around 70 percent. 

The grapes for the 2024 release were harvested by hand and underwent spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in stainless-steel tanks. Harvest began on 1 October, with warmer conditions later in the month allowing selected grapes to reach Auslese and Goldkapsel ripeness before picking concluded on 31 October. Within the Prüm range, Goldkapsel represents a limited-production selection made from particularly strong, concentrated Auslese fruit and commonly includes a degree of botrytis influence. The wine combines ripe white stone fruit, floral honey and tropical nuances with citrus foliage, orange peel and finely expressed slate minerality. Its generous natural sweetness is balanced by vivid acidity and a firm mineral framework, preserving freshness despite the wine’s considerable concentration. At 7.5% alcohol, it remains remarkably light and poised, with intensity delivered through fruit purity rather than weight. The palate is finely structured and persistent, carrying white peach, citrus zest, floral notes and saline mineral character towards an exceptionally long finish. Its concentration, acidity and tightly woven structure indicate outstanding potential for extended bottle ageing. It is particularly well suited to spicy Asian cuisine, richly flavoured savoury dishes, pâté, fruit-based desserts and mature cheeses.
