The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of Australian table wine, graduating with the 17th diploma in winemaking in Australia. He went on to become the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business, which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the custodian of Jim Barry Wines is their second son Peter, who joined the family winery in 1977 and now works along side his own sons, Tom and Sam.
The Armagh vineyard was planted in 1968 by Jim Barry and since the first release of the wine in 1985 it has been one of Australia’s most collected and awarded single vineyard wines. An absolute icon of Australian shiraz.
Good wine. Lots of mid-palate and a good amount of quality tannin, though ultimately it’s not an overly persistent wine. Lots of dark berried flavour and subtle, leathery development – this will live for a long while yet. There’s a notable creosote, eucalypt-like fragrance to it and subtle notes of truffle. - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 93 Points
