A later start to picking and a mild period of ripening finished with the last grapes being picked in mid-May. A wet 2016 winter gave us a good foundation for our predominantly dry-grown vines on their own roots, and a cool, wet and fiercely windy spring followed, with a slightly higher spring rainfall than the Barossa Valley, which delayed flowering, though conditions during set meant that yields were at average levels. A mild summer with regular rainfall events followed, which allowed the grapes to reach full physiological maturity. The significant rainfall events largely missed our area and therefore we harvested the majority of our grapes in healthy condition. As always, careful hand picking in the vineyard and sorting of grapes as they were processed made sure that quality was not compromised.
Deep ruby with vibrant crimson hues. Ethereal aromas of blackberry, raspberry compote, Satsuma plum, star anise and cocoa, entwined with crushed flowering herbs, fresh bay leaf, dried sage and rose petal. The palate is rich, complex, powerful and mouth coating with incredible freshness and elegant, silky layers of dark blackberry, Satsuma plum and red currant, a savoury line of charcuterie, and mature, velvety tannins revealing seamless length and depth.

The vivid colour, the perfume of the bouquet, the harmony of the red and black fruits, and the reassurance of precisely tailored tannins all add to the triumph of Prue Henschke in the vineyard, and Stephen Henschke in the winery. The synergy between these parts is such that there's no hint of a difficult - indeed, very difficult vintage.
On the palate, the wine is super fragrant, elegant and fine, with bone broth and rose petals, peppercorns, crushed herbs, black cherry, raspberry pip, black tea and graphite. This is an eloquent wine, and it speaks of the evocatively beautiful place that is the Eden Valley. The tannins hold the fruit in a gentle way in the mouth. It is fine, such a fine expression—I must say, it's not at all what I expected of the 2019 vintage. It's a triumph of a wine. Super.
Deep colour, still retaining a good tint of purple, the bouquet dusty/earthy/terracotta at first, then spicy berry fruits and earthy char notes join in, with black-loam nuances and the palate is deep and savoury, full-bodied and well supplied with drying tannins. The wine took time in the glass to reveal the fine detail for which the vineyard is renowned. The finish is big on black pepper drying tannins and savouriness. Concentrated and deep, and begs to be left alone in the cellar for a few years.
Henschke is a prestigious, family-owned winery with a rich legacy that spans over 153 years and six generations. Founded in 1862 by Johann Christian Henschke, the winery began with a modest vineyard in Keyneton, South Australia, and has since grown into one of Australia’s most celebrated wine estates. Located in the renowned Eden Valley wine region, Henschke's vineyards extend across some of the most esteemed wine-growing areas, including the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills. Their acclaimed single-vineyard sites, such as Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone, are a testament to the family's commitment to producing exceptional, site-specific wines that embody the uniqueness of their terroir.
The Henschke family’s dedication to excellence has earned them international recognition and accolades. In 2021, they were honoured as Wine Enthusiast’s New World Winery of the Year, further solidifying their global reputation for outstanding craftsmanship. Additionally, Henschke was named Winery of the Year by Halliday Wine Companion, and they proudly carry the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, reflecting their commitment to sustainability and environmentally conscious winemaking practices. With a legacy built on quality and innovation, Henschke continues to shape the future of Australian winemaking while maintaining their foundational values of excellence and respect for the land.
The Hill of Grace Vineyard is a story of resilience, dedication, and the enduring power of human connection to the land. For Rue Henschke, custodian of this exceptional site, the vineyard's regeneration has been a life's work and a source of immense pride.
Planted in the 1860s, the Hill of Grace boasts ancient vines that have weathered countless challenges. Their resilience is evident in the 'wonderful lift in flavour, colour and tannins' of the grapes they produce, a testament to the unique terroir of the Eden Valley. Rue feels a deep responsibility to nurture this "tiny Eden," a philosophy rooted in her scientific background in botany, zoology, and viticulture.
Time seems to have both flown by and stood still at the Hill of Grace. Generations of careful custodians have left their mark, their skillful pruning techniques whispering through the years. Looking ahead, Rue recognises the growing threat of extreme weather events. Here, meticulous planning comes into play, ensuring the vineyard's continued health and productivity.
The 2019 vintage exemplifies the challenges and rewards that come with nurturing the Hill of Grace. Low rainfall and unexpected frosts tested the vines, demanding extra care and attention. Through techniques like canopy lifting to promote sunlight exposure, Rue and her team coaxed the remaining grapes to their full potential. The resulting wine, a 'very limited release,' is a testament to the enduring spirit of the vineyard and the deep connection between vine and vintner. In every sip, one can taste the love and dedication poured into this remarkable site.
Opens with a dusty, terracotta-like bouquet. Turned earth and spicy berry fruits. Black cherry, raspberry pip, and black tea.
An evocative wine. Full bodied with drying graphite tannin. Unfurling with red and black berries and crushed herbs, and char notes. Deep and savoury over all.
Black pepper, mouth coating tannins for a savoury finish.
