Rich purple and inky blue fruits soar from the glass: cassis, mulberry, violets and an almost pine forest-like ozone freshness that brings lift and clarity to the sumptuous palate. Beautiful length, elegance and purity, with smooth graphite-like tannins and vibrant acidity. With no 2017 produced, this is worth the wait; a fitting toast to Cyril.
The wine is beautifully perfumed…Florals, raspberries, tobacco leaves, cherries, cigar box notes and bay leaves. There is excellent length here, good focus and fine acidity…Aniseed and cherry notes are to the fore on the palate and there are such soft tannins. A gentle sour plum character is sitting right at the end of the very long finish. Drive over the next twenty years.
Bright blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with top notes of redcurrant and red cherry. Olive tapenade, cedar, light briar notes and mountain herbs. Fine lacy acidity and tight, powdery tannin provide the frame, and there is no doubt that this release will age magnificently.
Henschke is a prestigious, family-owned winery with a rich legacy that spans over 153 years and six generations. Founded in 1862 by Johann Christian Henschke, the winery began with a modest vineyard in Keyneton, South Australia, and has since grown into one of Australia’s most celebrated wine estates. Located in the renowned Eden Valley wine region, Henschke's vineyards extend across some of the most esteemed wine-growing areas, including the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills. Their acclaimed single-vineyard sites, such as Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone, are a testament to the family's commitment to producing exceptional, site-specific wines that embody the uniqueness of their terroir.
The Henschke family’s dedication to excellence has earned them international recognition and accolades. In 2021, they were honoured as Wine Enthusiast’s New World Winery of the Year, further solidifying their global reputation for outstanding craftsmanship. Additionally, Henschke was named Winery of the Year by Halliday Wine Companion, and they proudly carry the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, reflecting their commitment to sustainability and environmentally conscious winemaking practices. With a legacy built on quality and innovation, Henschke continues to shape the future of Australian winemaking while maintaining their foundational values of excellence and respect for the land.
This wine carries the name of Stephen’s father, Cyril Henschke (1924-1979), as a tribute to one of Australia’s outstanding winemaking pioneers, renowned for old-vine single-vineyard and quality varietal table wines. Cyril planted cabernet sauvignon at the Henschke Eden Valley vineyard in the 1960s. The cabernet sauvignon vines, along with cabernet franc and merlot, are planted on a north facing slope, grown using organic and biodynamic practices. This wine celebrates the incredible beauty that emerges from the vibrant rows of the Eden Valley vineyard, revered for its texture, depth, complexity and fine-grained tannins.
2019 was a mild and dry winter, followed by a dry and windy spring, saw frost events in September and November that disrupted budburst and young shoot growth. A hailstorm in late November impacted the fresh young shoots carrying the crop, with shiraz the most affected. Warmer than average temperatures in January and February, including the hottest summer’s day on record, led to the advancement of maturity and early onset of vintage. Warm weather in late summer maintained low disease pressure and small berry size, providing optimal ripening conditions. Despite miniscule yields, 2019 was a high-quality vintage with beautiful expressions of varietal character, good structure and excellent flavour intensity. The 2019 vintage will be remembered as a challenging season where regenerative viticulture and organic and biodynamic practices were vital to nurturing the health of the Henschke vineyards through an exceptionally warm and dry year.
Lively and fragrant aromas of crushed flowering herbs, violets, briary blackberry, plum, black cherry and cassis, with subtle forest and cedar notes.
A rich, supple and complex palate of dark forest berries, dark chocolate, cooking spices and liquorice, interlaced with fresh acidity.
Finishes long, pleasant savouriness with fine grained tannins.
