      Powerfully structured and resolutely Yarra. Sexton Vineyard, perched on the steep north-facing slopes of the Warramate Ranges (130–210 m elevation), yields fruit of serious depth. Thin gravelly loam over rocky clay, combined with clonal selections like MV6 and G5V15, produce Pinot Noir with plush, concentrated character and a strong sense of site identity.

      The 2024 vintage, warm yet balanced, ripened swiftly and produced dark, clean fruit. Fermented using a mix of whole berries and whole bunches and matured in French oak barriques (approx. 25% new), the result is a wine rich in black cherry, plum, spice and graphite, with a texture that’s immediate rather than distant. This is Sexton in full, confident voice—earthy, robust, and generous on release.

      Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024

      From the Sexton vineyard in Gruyere planted in the late ’90s. 100% destemmed. A deep crimson ruby. Aromas of ripe dark raspberries, black-currant pastilles (these were always my favourite) and even a little kirsch. A touch of rose bush. The palate is juicy and fleshy and the wine’s ripe, plush tannins make this, along with the Primavera, the richest, meatiest and most immediate of the four single-vineyard Pinots in ’24. Having said this, you’d be happy if you found some laying around the cellar in eight or so years.

      Giant Steps

      Founded in 1997 by Phil Sexton, Giant Steps was born from a desire to craft cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with clarity and site expression in the Yarra Valley. Sexton, already a pioneer in Margaret River, saw untapped potential in the steep slopes near Gruyere — now home to the iconic Sexton Vineyard. A jazz devotee, he named the winery after John Coltrane’s landmark album Giant Steps, a nod to the bold creative pursuit of something singular.

      Over the decades, Giant Steps has drawn some of the most respected names in Australian wine. Steve Flamsteed joined as winemaker in 2003, cementing a house style focused on precision and transparency across six distinct vineyard sites. In 2021, Melanie Chester stepped in as Head of Winemaking and Viticulture, bringing a deep respect for the estate’s history and a commitment to pushing its potential even further.
