The north-facing slopes of the Warramate Ranges give Sexton Chardonnay its unmistakable presence. Planted by Phil Sexton in 1997, this vineyard has become one of the Yarra Valley’s defining Chardonnay sites. Thin soils, tough rocky clays and naturally low yields produce fruit of remarkable concentration, built around the famed Gingin and Mendoza clones.

The 2024 vintage was shaped by a classic Yarra Valley season: a cool spring, an even flowering, and a clean, fast ripening period that delivered brightness and precision. In the winery, fruit was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and wild-fermented in large French oak puncheons (20% new), with a touch of malolactic fermentation to soften edges. Nine months on lees has brought textural depth without obscuring the vineyard’s drive and clarity.

Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay sits at the confident heart of Giant Steps’ single-vineyard range. Its character is shaped by site, clone and aspect, delivering a wine that is both open and structured—an expression that balances power with restraint and rewards patient cellaring.

      Trusted by the professionals

Another salivating and seductive Sexton Chardonnay with its bouquet of stone fruits, preserved lemons, freshly ground coffee beans and roasted hazelnut. The beautifully balanced and tightly coiled palate is underpinned by its concentration and intensity. Finishes saline and extremely long. It's all here and needs another five to seven years, at least, to reach its zenith.

      Giant Steps

Founded in 1997 by Phil Sexton, Giant Steps was born from a desire to craft cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with clarity and site expression in the Yarra Valley. Sexton, already a pioneer in Margaret River, saw untapped potential in the steep slopes near Gruyere — now home to the iconic Sexton Vineyard. A jazz devotee, he named the winery after John Coltrane’s landmark album Giant Steps, a nod to the bold creative pursuit of something singular.

Over the decades, Giant Steps has drawn some of the most respected names in Australian wine. Steve Flamsteed joined as winemaker in 2003, cementing a house style focused on precision and transparency across six distinct vineyard sites. In 2021, Melanie Chester stepped in as Head of Winemaking and Viticulture, bringing a deep respect for the estate’s history and a commitment to pushing its potential even further.
