The Felton Road Calvert Pinot Noir 2023 is a wine that embodies the elegance and complexity that Central Otago is known for. Sourced from the Calvert Vineyard, just 1km east of The Elms Vineyard and the winery, this wine reflects the unique terroir of the Bannockburn subregion. The vineyard’s deep silty soils with a thin layer of loess topsoil, combined with the meticulous vineyard practices, create an environment that produces Pinot Noir with finesse and mineral precision.
The 2023 vintage showcases the Calvert Vineyard’s signature balance of elegance and structure, with floral notes of rose petal and violets, complemented by subtle hints of cola, cardamom, and polished leather. A core of sweet red cherry provides the foundation for the wine, while the mineral-laden fine tannins take centre stage, leading to a sustained, memorable finish. The wine is a pure expression of its terroir, where vibrancy and mineral complexity shine.
The 2023 vintage benefited from a warm and dry December, followed by cooler night temperatures that allowed for slow and steady ripening. This ideal growing season allowed the fruit to reach optimal maturity, resulting in a wine with great focus, depth, and balance. The Calvert Pinot Noir is a sophisticated and refined expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir, with great ageing potential and a structure that speaks to both immediate enjoyment and future cellaring.

Commencing with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture (BioGro and Demeter certified) ensures that our fruit arrives at the winery as pure as it can be, while our entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands off winemaking: gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, an avoidance of fining and filtration all help preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of our unique vineyards. Felton Road choses to apply Biodynamic Agriculture. This approach is suggested by the German philosopher, Rudolph Steiner, in the 1920’s: it the next step beyond conventional organics (which is a pre-requisite to Biodynamics) and starts, in essence, with a simple idea: If we view a farm as a single, symbiotic living organism, then the more vigorous and complex that organism is, the richer the growing medium it provides for everything within the farm. In other words, the goal of Biodynamics is to maximise the living energy within this system in order to make it self-sustaining and of the highest quality.
So to maximise the living energy within their soils, Felton Road makes Biodynamic composts which form the foundation of this growing regime. Further Biodynamic strategies are employed in their vineyards including planting cover crops and wild flowers within the vineyard itself. Beyond sustainability, Biodynamics also promotes guardianship of the land by maximising the biodiversity it supports. For instance the hillsides behind the vines are home to a herd of goats, which keep the briar at bay while supplying meat for the table. Within the vineyard, they keep a clutch of chickens that forage amongst the vines, repaying them with natural manure, and supplying the team with delicious, organic eggs. Idyllic stuff.
Felton Road’s philosophy is grounded in sustainability and a deep respect for the land. By embracing organic and biodynamic practices, the winery ensures that each vine thrives in harmony with its environment. Every decision, from canopy management to harvest timing, is made with the goal of expressing the true nature of the vineyard. With a hands-off winemaking approach, Felton Road uses indigenous yeasts, avoids fining and filtration, and allows the wines to evolve naturally. The result is wines that are rich in complexity, character, and authenticity, offering a true reflection of their unique Central Otago terroir.
The nose opens with delicate floral notes of rose petal and violets, layered with intriguing hints of cola, cardamom, and polished leather. The aromas evolve to reveal a complex, earthy depth that speaks to the Calvert Vineyard’s unique terroir.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and structured, with a seamless balance of red cherry and berry fruit. The wine expands beautifully, offering a harmonious blend of fresh acidity and silky tannins. The depth and mineral character of the wine come through, adding complexity to the fruit-forward profile.
The finish is long and mineral, with bright red fruit and subtle spice lingering on the palate. The wine’s focus and refinement are highlighted by the lingering finish, which showcases the fine tannins and purity of the wine.
