View full detailsThe Felton Road Block 5 Pinot Noir 2023 is a testament to the elegance and complexity that Central Otago’s terroir imparts on Pinot Noir. Sourced from the iconic Block 5 vineyard, this wine showcases the finest attributes of the Bannockburn subregion. Planted in 1993, Block 5 is situated on a gentle north-facing slope in the heart of The Elms vineyard, where the varying soils of loess, clay lakebed deposits, and angular schist gravels create the ideal environment for Pinot Noir to thrive.
Felton Road’s commitment to organic and biodynamic practices ensures that each grape harvested is of the highest quality. The fruit from Block 5 is hand-harvested and carefully managed throughout the growing season, with meticulous canopy and fruit management. The winemaking process is hands-off, allowing the wine to express its true character, with indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, and no fining or filtration. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 16 months (25% new oak), which adds depth and complexity to this elegant Pinot Noir.
The 2023 vintage was marked by ideal growing conditions, with a warm and dry summer followed by cooler nights that allowed for slow and steady ripening. This resulted in a wine with a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and structure—qualities that are hallmark traits of Felton Road wines. The wine’s seamless integration of fruit and tannins, along with its silky texture and impressive length, make it a standout example of New Zealand Pinot Noir.

Commencing with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture (BioGro and Demeter certified) ensures that our fruit arrives at the winery as pure as it can be, while our entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands off winemaking: gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, an avoidance of fining and filtration all help preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of our unique vineyards. Gareth King; Viticulturist, Blair Walter; Winemaker, Nigel Greening; Proprietor.
Felton Road choses to apply Biodynamic Agriculture. This approach is suggested by the German philosopher, Rudolph Steiner, in the 1920’s: it the next step beyond conventional organics (which is a pre-requisite to Biodynamics) and starts, in essence, with a simple idea: If we view a farm as a single, symbiotic living organism, then the more vigorous and complex that organism is, the richer the growing medium it provides for everything within the farm. In other words, the goal of Biodynamics is to maximise the living energy within this system in order to make it self-sustaining and of the highest quality.
So to maximise the living energy within their soils, Felton Road makes Biodynamic composts which form the foundation of this growing regime. Further Biodynamic strategies are employed in their vineyards including planting cover crops and wild flowers within the vineyard itself. Beyond sustainability, Biodynamics also promotes guardianship of the land by maximising the biodiversity it supports. For instance the hillsides behind the vines are home to a herd of goats, which keep the briar at bay while supplying meat for the table. Within the vineyard, they keep a clutch of chickens that forage amongst the vines, repaying them with natural manure, and supplying the team with delicious, organic eggs. Idyllic stuff.
Felton Road’s philosophy is grounded in sustainability and a deep respect for the land. By embracing organic and biodynamic practices, the winery ensures that each vine thrives in harmony with its environment. Every decision, from canopy management to harvest timing, is made with the goal of expressing the true nature of the vineyard. With a hands-off winemaking approach, Felton Road uses indigenous yeasts, avoids fining and filtration, and allows the wines to evolve naturally. The result is wines that are rich in complexity, character, and authenticity, offering a true reflection of their unique Central Otago terroir.
The nose opens with inviting aromas of red berries, including cherry and raspberry, intertwined with delicate floral notes and hints of spice. A subtle earthiness and a touch of oak round out the aromatic profile, showcasing the wine’s complexity.
The palate is expansive, with the red fruit flavours of cherry and plum taking the lead. There is a seamless balance between fruit and acidity, creating a vibrant and fresh mouthfeel. The wine’s silk-laden tannins provide a smooth texture, while hints of spice and earthiness add depth and complexity.
The finish is long and precise, with lingering red fruit and spice notes that highlight the wine’s elegance. The fine tannins and balanced acidity create a refined and satisfying conclusion, with the wine’s purity and focus shining through.
