A benchmark Gigondas from some of the oldest vines in the appellation. Domaine Saint-Damien’s Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a powerful expression of southern Rhône terroir. Sourced from Grenache planted in 1964 and Mourvèdre from 1977, this cuvée reflects both deep-rooted vineyards and the quiet authority of a family estate. The Saurel family has farmed these slopes for generations. Under Romain Saurel, with the influence of the late Philippe Cambie, the domaine continues to define the region’s direction.

Fermentation takes place in concrete, followed by ageing in large, seasoned foudres. The process avoids fining and filtration, preserving texture and purity. The result is a Gigondas of structure and clarity, shaped by site rather than cellar. It offers early generosity yet carries the depth and balance to age with grace. This is confident, traditional winemaking, anchored in old vines and honest farming.

The 2023 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes offers fabulous notes of black cherries, licorice, roasted garrigue, and peppery Provençal nuances. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied Gigondas offering ample mid-palate depth, sweet tannins, and a great finish.

      Domaine Saint-Damien

Domaine Saint-Damien is a benchmark southern Rhône estate rooted in tradition and quiet discipline. The Saurel family has farmed these lands since 1821, but it was not until 1979 that the current domaine was established, with estate bottling resuming in 1996. Today, the estate is led by Romain Saurel, a trained oenologist who now oversees both viticulture and winemaking. Under his direction, Saint-Damien has become one of the most consistent and respected names in Gigondas, producing wines of clarity, structure and site expression.

The estate covers 45 hectares, with 15 hectares in Gigondas, including parcels in La Louisiane, Les Souteyrades, and Le Gravas. Vine age is significant, with many Grenache and Mourvèdre vines planted between the 1960s and 1970s. All vineyards have been certified organic since 2012 and are farmed with precision and restraint. With vine density at 5,000 per hectare and low yields, the focus remains on fruit integrity and vineyard health.
