      Once thought too steep and cold for perfect ripening, Auxey-Duresses is located just above the village of Meursault and is finally hitting its stride. More fresh and mineral giving notable acidity, its cooler aspect works so well in the warmer vintages like 2022. These are among the sites that will benefit from global warming. It delivers fine, fresh aromas of citrus and white flowers, underscored by a distinct chalky minerality.

      Auxey Duresses adjoins Meursault vineyards close to some of the most famed vineyards of the village with Les Luchets and Vireuils joining directly on to Meursault as the village points to the hills just to the west. Here the slopes are steeper and the limestone more apparent and the wines correspondingly more fresh and mineral. Hand harvest or low yields, whole bunch pressing, long ageing on lees 12 months for Aligote and Bourgogne and up to 18 months for Meursaults.

      Coche's wines represent excellent value, people should realise Burgundy is still accessible, particularly in appellations not of interest to investors’, as Wine journalist Matthew Hayes explains. '[Fabien Coche] Traditional rather than austere modern wines, they are oaked but not over-oaked, and substantial without being fat. They are fairly priced, too, if anything in Burgundy remains actually fairly priced.'

      Domaine Fabien Coche Auxey Duresses Blanc 2022

      The village Auxey from Fabien Coche has an alluring concentration of lemon peel and green apple fruit with hints of white flowers, butter, and spice. The fruit carries through nicely on the palate, with a creamy texture and marvellous balance. Coche farms 0.30 hectares in the lieux-dits Les Faux and Macabrée; in 2023, he will add Les Hatées, which has been replanted in Chardonnay. This wine will be ready to drink on release and suitable for cellaring for up to five years.

      White flowers and apple. There is a touch of buttery oak too with spice on the finish. More apple on the palate, the whole quite meaty and substantial. Ripe and full-ish.

      Fourth-generation winemaker Fabien Coche leads one of Meursault’s most quietly exceptional domaines. With a family lineage linked to the iconic Coche-Dury estate, Fabien has earned a reputation for precision and authenticity. Since taking over the family property in 2005, he has refined his craft through thoughtful farming, restrained cellar work, and an unwavering focus on purity. His winemaking philosophy centres on balance and patience, favouring natural expression over intervention. Each parcel is hand-harvested, pressed gently, and aged slowly to preserve the energy and individuality of the fruit.

      Fabien’s approach reflects a respect for tradition combined with a contemporary understanding of Burgundy’s evolving landscape. Farming organically since 1998, he champions low yields and minimal manipulation in both the vineyard and the cellar. Whites are aged on lees for up to 18 months to build quiet depth and texture, while reds are handled with a light touch, showing finesse rather than force. The result is a collection of wines that embody clarity, refinement, and timeless character, standing confidently among the finest in Meursault today.
