Craiglee Shiraz 2020
Craiglee vineyards were first planted in 1863 by James Stewart Johnston, a prominent Melbourne businessman and member of Parliament. He and his sons made wines on the site until the mid 1920's when due to changing economic conditions, the vines were ripped up and the property turned to sheep farming. After a chance tasting of a 1972 vintage from the site in 1972 a decision was made to re-entered the wine business and in 1976 new vines were planted by Pat Carmody, with the first vintage being released three years later.
Today, Pat continues to make wine from fruit grown, hand-picked and bottled at Craiglee, and is involved in every step of the process.
The 2020 Craiglee Shiraz, crafted from a cooler vintage, is a beautifully nuanced expression of its terroir. In the glass, it presents a medium red hue that hints at its elegance. On the nose, the wine reveals an enticing bouquet of fresh raspberries intertwined with subtle notes of musk lollies, creating a charmingly aromatic profile. The palate offers a nicely rounded entry and mid-palate, showcasing a harmonious blend of red fruit and savoury elements. A delicate olive dip character adds a unique twist, enhancing the wine’s complexity. The tannins are refined and chalky, providing a sophisticated texture that complements the fruit's vibrancy. The finish is long and satisfying, underscoring the wine’s well-structured nature.
This Shiraz is poised for a significant evolution over the next decade, promising further depth and integration with time. An excellent choice for aging or enjoying now with a touch of decanting.
