Coriole Estate Shiraz 2023 is a classic McLaren Vale red from one of the region’s long-standing family-owned estates. Shiraz has been Coriole’s principal variety and flagship wine since the estate’s first bottling in 1970. The wine is made from 100% estate-grown Shiraz, with the average vine age around 50 years old. These mature vineyards contribute depth, concentration and savoury complexity while retaining the bright fruit expression associated with McLaren Vale. The wine is made in a traditional manner, fermented in open tanks, hand plunged and matured in French oak hogsheads. This approach supports the natural structure of the fruit while adding measured oak influence and polish.

The 2023 vintage was shaped by cool and wet La Niña conditions, which led to a later start to harvest and naturally moderate yields. Careful vineyard management helped produce clean, healthy fruit with good ripeness and length of flavour. The wine shows the depth and complexity of Coriole’s old estate vineyards, with blackberry, violet, black tea and dried sage on the nose. The palate carries pepper, cherry ripe, blackberry, dark fruit, plum and cacao, framed by lush tannins and balanced acidity. Full bodied, rich and graceful, it reflects both the generosity of McLaren Vale Shiraz and the elegance of a cooler growing season. It is well suited to slow-cooked lamb, grilled meats, roasted vegetables and richly flavoured savoury dishes.

“An intense deep purple in the glass, showing ripe black cherry and mulberry fruit, with raspberry jam and vanilla-cream-on-scones. Oak is evident with subtle hints of cedar. The palate is rich and chocolaty with a plush, appealing texture that carries the fruit through to a long and layered finish. Ripe, expressive and generous, this is drinking well now but will repay hiding away for a number of years.”

      Coriole Estate

Coriole Vineyards is a historic, family-owned producer located in McLaren Vale, South Australia, with its first wine released by founders Hugh and Molly Lloyd in 1969. The Lloyd family continues to manage the estate, with the third generation now represented by General Manager Peter Lloyd and Senior Winemaker Duncan Lloyd. Coriole is particularly renowned for Shiraz, drawing from estate vineyards that include vines planted as far back as 1919. The property encompasses numerous individual vineyard blocks across McLaren Vale, while the family also manages selected sites in Blewitt Springs, Willunga and McLaren Flat. Alongside traditional regional varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Chenin Blanc, Coriole has played a pioneering role in introducing Italian grape varieties to Australia. The estate planted Sangiovese in 1985 and later established important early plantings of varieties such as Fiano, helping broaden the identity of Australian wine. Through more than five decades of family stewardship, Coriole has developed a distinctive portfolio that combines McLaren Vale tradition with curiosity, experimentation and a deep understanding of its vineyards.
