Elegant structure and southern intensity define the Cloudy Bay Te Wāhi Pinot Noir 2022, a refined expression of Central Otago crafted by one of New Zealand’s most internationally acclaimed producers. Meaning “the place” in Māori, Te Wāhi reflects Cloudy Bay’s deep commitment to showcasing the dramatic terroir of Central Otago through a distinctly savoury and mineral-driven Pinot Noir style. Sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Bendigo and Northburn, the wine captures the region’s rugged schist soils, continental climate and significant diurnal temperature shifts, all of which contribute to concentration, freshness and complexity. The 2022 vintage benefited from excellent growing conditions, producing fruit with vibrant aromatics, fine tannin structure and impressive balance.
In the glass the wine is layered and expressive, opening with aromas of dark cherry, wild thyme and plum accented by dried herbs, baking spice and subtle floral lift. The palate is finely detailed and structured, combining ripe berry fruit with earthy savouriness and vibrant natural acidity. Careful oak maturation in French barrels adds texture and spice while preserving purity and regional definition. Te Wāhi is crafted in a more brooding and structured style compared to many fruit-forward New Zealand Pinot Noirs, offering depth and cellar-worthy complexity. The 2022 release displays both immediate appeal and underlying tension, with silky tannins carrying the wine through a long mineral finish. This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with duck, venison, wild mushroom dishes or herb-crusted lamb

“This has aromas of dark cherries, wild herbs, violets and baking spices. Medium-bodied with finely tuned tannins and vivid acidity. Structured and refined with excellent energy and a mineral finish. Drink or hold.”
“Aromatic and detailed bouquet with scents of dark cherry and plum, layers of spice and barrel smoke, there’s a savoury dried herb quality and complexity from lees and wood spices. Dry, textured and delicious with flavours that mirror the bouquet. Tannins and acidity frame the core fruit flavours nicely with a lengthy finish and youthful power.”
“The 2022 Te Wahi Pinot Noir is layered with dark fruit, dried herbs and savoury complexity. There’s impressive concentration here, balanced by fine acidity and chalky tannins that carry through a long, structured finish.”
