Clonakilla is a family winery, established in 1971. Their wines draw character from the granite soils and cool, continental climate of the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales.
The flagship of Clonakilla, their Shiraz Viognier, is created from a careful selection of the highest quality Shiraz Viognier parcels they craft each year from their Murrumbateman vineyard.
After the heat, drought and bushfires of 2020, the 2021 vintage in the Canberra District was marked by a cooler than average Summer and regular falls of rain. A more European vintage perhaps. The cool season and longer ripening period have given us a beautifully fragrant wine with serious spice and soaring floral aromas along with classically fine, supple tannins.
Medium-deep red with a good tint of purple, but not dark. The bouquet is light and lifted, fragrant and fresh, with red and blue berry and spicy as well as foresty nuances, some talcy floral nuances and lots to entertain. The faintest echo of eucalypt forest-floor. In the mouth, it’s at the medium end of full-bodied, the tannins beautifully smooth and well formed so that it's deceptively easy to enjoy already, but no doubt has what it takes to age gracefully. - Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 95 Points
