Perfume, concentration and deceptive structural power define the Chatto Seven Inch Pinot Noir 2024, a single-vineyard expression from Tasmania’s cool Huon Valley. Produced by Pinot Noir specialist Jim Chatto, the wine is sourced from the Seven Inch Vineyard near Seven Inch Beach at Glaziers Bay, close to Chatto’s own Isle Vineyard. The 2024 release marks ten years of collaboration between Chatto and vineyard owners Max and Sue Kitchell. The exceptionally small vineyard contains approximately 1,000 vines and yielded around one and a half tonnes of fruit for this release, producing approximately 1,350 bottles. Jim Chatto describes Seven Inch as a deceptive wine whose tannins initially appear soft and velvety before revealing considerable underlying power.
The 2024 vintage followed Tasmania’s driest summer on record, resulting in an early harvest across the island. Dry El Niño conditions created minimal disease pressure and favourable conditions for clean, even ripening. The resulting Pinot Noirs possess greater flesh and structure than the preceding couple of vintages while retaining the freshness required for early enjoyment and further development. Aromatically expressive, Seven Inch combines violet, ripe cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry with pomegranate, dried herbs and deeper savoury spice. The palate is concentrated and mouth-filling, yet remains supple and energetic, with bright acidity balancing its generous fruit. Fine but persistent tannins provide a sculpted framework beneath layers of forest floor, smoked meat, herbs and restrained cedar. Its combination of fruit purity, freshness and underlying structure makes it approachable with food in its youth while providing the depth to develop gracefully over the next decade.
