Depth, savoury complexity and muscular structure define the Chatto Killara Farm Pinot Noir 2023, a single-vineyard expression from Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Produced by respected Pinot Noir specialist Jim Chatto, the wine reflects the darker fruit profile and layered character associated with this relatively warm and dry Tasmanian region. The fruit was grown by Gill Christian and Todd Goebel at their Brinktop Road vineyard in Penna. The 2023 vintage represents Chatto’s second single-vineyard release from this distinctive site. Made entirely from Pinot Noir, the wine combines equal portions of the MV6, D2V4 and D5V12 clones. Each clone was selected for the individual dimension it contributes to the finished blend. The D2V4, also known as Pommard, provides muscular structure and depth, while MV6 introduces spice, tension and perfumed dried-herb notes. D5V12 contributes ripe red berries and a natural sweetness that balances the wine’s more savoury elements.

The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented for approximately 10 days on skins, with regular hand plunging used for measured extraction. Indigenous yeast initiated fermentation, while approximately 12.5 per cent whole bunches contributed additional fragrance and structural complexity. The wine was matured in two- and three-year-old French oak puncheons, allowing the fruit and vineyard character to remain prominent, and was bottled in January 2024. Aromatically expressive, it combines ripe plum, cherry and wild blackberry with jasmine, citrus blossom, dried herbs and exotic spice. The palate is medium-bodied yet concentrated, showing dark cherry, mulberry, sweet berry fruit and amaro-like savouriness. Fine tannins and focused acidity provide balance, while notes of cedar, cassia bark and earth add further complexity. A savoury, stony and gently saline finish reinforces the wine’s composed structure and distinctive Coal River Valley character. Although expressive upon release, its fruit depth, acidity and fine tannins should support further development with careful cellaring.

      Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is one of Australia’s most respected winemakers, a craftsman with over 25 years of experience and an unwavering devotion to Pinot Noir. A former Chief Winemaker for both McWilliam’s and Kreglinger/Pipers Brook, and a former Chair of Judges for the National Wine Show of Australia, Jim brings precision and purpose to every vintage.

His story began in Tasmania in the late 1990s, where he fell in love with the region’s cool-climate Pinot and the land that would later become home. Alongside his wife Daisy, Jim established Chatto Wines in pursuit of Pinot at its most expressive, wines that speak clearly of place, balance, and time. From their small vineyard in the Huon Valley, Jim crafts limited releases that have earned critical acclaim and a loyal following of collectors who understand his quiet pursuit of excellence.
