Precision, aromatic complexity and finely structured intensity define the Chatto Intrigue Pinot Noir 2024, an estate-grown expression from the Isle Vineyard at Glaziers Bay in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. Produced by respected Pinot Noir specialist Jim Chatto, Intrigue is blended from all eight Pinot Noir clones planted across the estate vineyard. Unlike the flagship Isle Pinot Noir, which is assembled from a smaller seasonal selection of clones, Intrigue is designed to present a broader interpretation of the vineyard. Each component contributes a different dimension of fruit, spice, perfume and structure, creating a layered yet cohesive expression of the site. The estate’s naturally low yields allow the grapes to develop concentration at moderate sugar levels, helping the finished wine retain freshness, natural acidity and poise.

The 2024 growing season produced Tasmanian Pinot Noirs with greater flesh and structure than the preceding couple of vintages, while maintaining sufficient freshness for early drinking and further development. Chatto’s wines are generally wild-fermented in open fermenters, with carefully judged whole-bunch inclusion adapted to each parcel, vineyard and season. The wine combines darker Pinot Noir fruit with smoky reduction, savoury herbs, exotic spice and mineral detail. Aromatically, wild strawberry, dark cherry and dried cranberry are joined by pomegranate, wildflowers, forest floor and crushed-stone nuances. The palate is medium-bodied but concentrated, with pure cherry fruit carried by vibrant acidity and finely textured tannins. Notes of liquorice, clove, anise, earthy spice and subtle oak contribute complexity without obscuring the clarity of the fruit. Fine, kinetic tannins provide definition through the long finish, while a mineral line gives the wine energy and composure. Although already expressive, its concentration, balance and structural detail indicate the capacity to develop gracefully through the early 2030s and potentially beyond.

“The palate is high fidelity and the pure fruit unfurls with detail and a stony composure. The tannins are kinetic, silty and fine.”

      — Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, 97 Points.

“A powerhouse of a pinot. Concentration and poise aplenty. Impressive wine.”

      — Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 97 Points.

“Smoke, sweet and sour cherries, herbs, spices, minerals and leaves. It’s all going on and it’s all pulling together.”

      Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is one of Australia’s most respected winemakers, a craftsman with over 25 years of experience and an unwavering devotion to Pinot Noir. A former Chief Winemaker for both McWilliam’s and Kreglinger/Pipers Brook, and a former Chair of Judges for the National Wine Show of Australia, Jim brings precision and purpose to every vintage.

His story began in Tasmania in the late 1990s, where he fell in love with the region’s cool-climate Pinot and the land that would later become home. Alongside his wife Daisy, Jim established Chatto Wines in pursuit of Pinot at its most expressive, wines that speak clearly of place, balance, and time. From their small vineyard in the Huon Valley, Jim crafts limited releases that have earned critical acclaim and a loyal following of collectors who understand his quiet pursuit of excellence.
