Delicacy, aromatic purity and fine-boned structure define the Chatto Bird Pinot Noir 2025, an elegant single-vineyard expression from Tasmania’s Pipers River region. Crafted by respected winemaker Jim Chatto, the wine is sourced from the Bird Vineyard, a cool-climate site planted by Tasmanian wine pioneer Dr Andrew Pirie in 1998. The parcel supplied to Chatto consists of Clone 114 Pinot Noir, a selection particularly suited to producing fragrant, red-fruited wines with refined structure. Bird is regarded as the lightest and most ethereal Pinot Noir within the Chatto grower-wine collection, affectionately described by the producer as its “gateway Pinot.” Despite its delicate proportions, the wine possesses impressive flavour clarity and enough structural detail to offer more than simple early-drinking charm.

The 2025 growing season was dry and early across Tasmania, producing a wine with slightly more weight than is typically associated with Bird while retaining the vineyard’s characteristic lift and finesse. The fruit was wild fermented, matured in large older oak vessels and handled gently to preserve purity and aromatic expression. Red cherry, raspberry, red plum and redcurrant form the wine’s vibrant fruit core, complemented by floral perfume and finely measured spice. Savoury elements of leaf litter, meadow herbs, dried mushroom and subtle nutty oak provide complexity without diminishing its transparency. The palate is light in frame but persistent, carried by fine savoury tannins and a distinctly sapid mineral line. Bright natural freshness gives the wine energy and balance, while the measured fruit sweetness makes it immediately inviting. Although highly approachable upon release, its purity, acidity and fine structure should allow it to develop gracefully over the short to medium term.

“It's a gorgeous little thing. It's the lightest wine in the Chatto quiver, with a delicate fruit weight and sapid mineral cadence.”

      Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is one of Australia’s most respected winemakers, a craftsman with over 25 years of experience and an unwavering devotion to Pinot Noir. A former Chief Winemaker for both McWilliam’s and Kreglinger/Pipers Brook, and a former Chair of Judges for the National Wine Show of Australia, Jim brings precision and purpose to every vintage.

His story began in Tasmania in the late 1990s, where he fell in love with the region’s cool-climate Pinot and the land that would later become home. Alongside his wife Daisy, Jim established Chatto Wines in pursuit of Pinot at its most expressive, wines that speak clearly of place, balance, and time. From their small vineyard in the Huon Valley, Jim crafts limited releases that have earned critical acclaim and a loyal following of collectors who understand his quiet pursuit of excellence.
