The Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard White Stones Chardonnay 2022 is an extraordinary wine that showcases the unique terroir of the Adrianna Vineyard, located in the high-altitude Gualtallary sub-district of Mendoza, Argentina. This exceptional Chardonnay comes from a select 27 rows in the White Stones parcel, named for the oval white stones that cover the vineyard’s alluvial riverbed soils. These stony soils contribute to the wine's distinct minerality, with the rocky conditions stressing the vines to produce low yields and highly concentrated fruit. At almost 5,000 feet elevation, the vineyard experiences cool nights that encourage slow ripening, preserving the fruit's natural acidity and enhancing its complexity.
Crafted with precision, this wine undergoes fermentation in French oak barrels, where it spends 12-16 months aging in second, third, and fourth-use barrels. The result is a beautifully balanced Chardonnay with rich texture, vibrant acidity, and an elegant complexity. Its pure expression of the Adrianna Vineyard's unique conditions makes it a wine of rare depth, with a profile marked by citrus, floral notes, and a distinct mineral edge. This wine is an ideal reflection of Catena Zapata’s dedication to producing world-class wines from some of the most unique and carefully studied terroirs in Argentina.
Drink Window – 2023-2031
Food Pairings – This Chardonnay is versatile and pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its rich texture and bright acidity make it an excellent match for seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, and oysters, as well as creamy pastas, roasted chicken, and soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.

Nicolás Catena Zapata planted the Adrianna vineyard in Gualtallary with a single goal in mind: to find the coolest location for growing vines in Mendoza. Originally, viticulturists feared that Bordeaux varieties such as Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon would not ripen in Adrianna. In terms of the Winkler classification, a method developed in California to add degrees and categorise regions according to their climate, the weather at Adrianna is between zone 1 and zone 2 depending on the year, putting it between Burgundy and a very cool part of Bordeaux. Even so, no French woman would dare to plant Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec in Burgundy.
Yet that is exactly what the Catenas did in the high-altitude soils of Adrianna. Nicolás planted the Adrianna Vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay cuttings from France, and with Malbec taken from Lot 18 of his 75-year-old Angélica vineyard. Over the next few years the wines consistently proved to have more minerality and more acidity than wines from other sites in the Southern Uco Valley at lower altitudes—sites such as Altamira, La Consulta and Eugenio Bustos. The Adrianna Malbecs have more grip and denser tannins.
For over four generations, the Catena family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina. In his pursuit to make wines that stand with the best in the world, Nicolás Catena identified the best lots, and rows, in the Catena family’s estate vineyards. The Adrianna vineyard is located at almost 1500m elevation in the Gualtallary sub-district of the Tupungato region of Uco Valley Mendoza. At this extreme high altitude, the nights are cool, only a few degrees above freezing even in the summer. The night-day temperature difference is between 15 and 20 degrees. And the sunlight is more intense because of the altitude.
The rocky soil enables deep root growth and allows for ideal drainage conditions. These are very poor soils where the vines are constantly in conditions of stress. The cool nights allow for very slow ripening, optimal acid retention and low yields.
A fragrant bouquet of vibrant citrus notes—lemon zest, grapefruit, and lime—intertwined with delicate white floral aromas. Subtle hints of toasted almond and a mineral edge reminiscent of wet stones provide additional layers of complexity, making the wine both inviting and intriguing.
This Chardonnay is full-bodied and textural, with flavours of ripe citrus fruits, green apple, and a touch of stone fruit. The wine’s natural acidity is beautifully balanced by a creamy mouthfeel, derived from its time spent in oak barrels and on lees. The mineral notes from the stony soils of the White Stones parcel add a distinctive freshness, while hints of hazelnut and vanilla provide depth and elegance.
The finish is long and crisp, with lingering citrus and mineral notes that provide a refreshing, clean sensation. The wine’s acidity and minerality persist, leaving a lasting impression of balance and refinement.
