The Adrianna Vineyard White Bones Chardonnay 2022 is a remarkable wine that showcases the unique terroir of Catena Zapata’s Adrianna Vineyard, one of the highest and most esteemed vineyard sites in Mendoza, Argentina. Situated at nearly 5,000 feet in the Gualtallary sub-district of the Tupungato region, this wine is crafted from select rows of vines in Block 1, named for the calcareous soils beneath, rich with fossilized animal bones and limestone deposits. These distinctive soils, along with the vineyard’s extreme high-altitude climate, provide the ideal conditions for the development of Chardonnay grapes with remarkable aromatic complexity and minerality.
In 2022, the vineyard experienced ideal growing conditions, with cool nights and intense sunlight allowing for slow ripening and optimal flavor development. Wild yeasts and a natural fermentation process enhance the wine’s complexity, while 12-16 months of aging in second, third, and fourth-use oak barrels contribute to its balance and subtle texture. The White Bones Chardonnay 2022 displays a harmonious combination of floral aromas, earthy minerality, and citrus notes, making it a perfect representation of the region’s ability to produce world-class Chardonnay.

Nicolás Catena Zapata planted the Adrianna vineyard in Gualtallary with a single goal in mind: to find the coolest location for growing vines in Mendoza. Originally, viticulturists feared that Bordeaux varieties such as Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon would not ripen in Adrianna. In terms of the Winkler classification, a method developed in California to add degrees and categorise regions according to their climate, the weather at Adrianna is between zone 1 and zone 2 depending on the year, putting it between Burgundy and a very cool part of Bordeaux. Even so, no French woman would dare to plant Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec in Burgundy.
Yet that is exactly what the Catenas did in the high-altitude soils of Adrianna. Nicolás planted the Adrianna Vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay cuttings from France, and with Malbec taken from Lot 18 of his 75-year-old Angélica vineyard. Over the next few years the wines consistently proved to have more minerality and more acidity than wines from other sites in the Southern Uco Valley at lower altitudes—sites such as Altamira, La Consulta and Eugenio Bustos. The Adrianna Malbecs have more grip and denser tannins.
For over four generations, the Catena family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina. In his pursuit to make wines that stand with the best in the world, Nicolás Catena identified the best lots, and rows, in the Catena family’s estate vineyards. The Adrianna vineyard is located at almost 1500m elevation in the Gualtallary sub-district of the Tupungato region of Uco Valley Mendoza. At this extreme high altitude, the nights are cool, only a few degrees above freezing even in the summer. The night-day temperature difference is between 15 and 20 degrees. And the sunlight is more intense because of the altitude.
The rocky soil enables deep root growth and allows for ideal drainage conditions. These are very poor soils where the vines are constantly in conditions of stress. The cool nights allow for very slow ripening, optimal acid retention and low yields.
Delicate aromas of fresh citrus, including lemon and lime, complemented by floral notes of jasmine and white flowers. The distinctive minerality from the vineyard’s calcareous soils adds depth, while a subtle hint of stone fruit—like ripe apricot—further enhances the aromatic profile.
A beautiful balance between the richness of tropical fruit and the minerality that defines the Adrianna Vineyard. Flavors of ripe citrus and green apple are complemented by a touch of honeyed sweetness, with a smooth, round texture. The wine’s crisp acidity keeps the palate fresh, while a gentle oak influence adds a layer of complexity.
The finish is long and persistent, with a vibrant citrus-driven freshness that lingers on the palate. A touch of vanilla and toasted oak provides an elegant backdrop to the wine's vibrant acidity, ensuring that the wine will continue to develop with age.
