An expressive and finely structured Pinot Noir from Geelong’s elevated Tout Pres vineyard. Grown by Nick Farr for By Farr, this 2023 release exemplifies the family’s meticulous site-driven philosophy. Planted in 2001 across three distinct soil types, black volcanic over limestone, quartz gravel with ironstone, and grey sandy loam, Tout Pres is a densely spaced, high-altitude vineyard whose name fittingly means “very cosy”. Each vine competes intensely, yielding fruit of remarkable concentration and natural tension.
Fermented entirely with whole bunches in small oak fermenters, this Pinot Noir reveals the estate’s hallmark savoury perfume and layered texture. The palate carries dark cherry, forest floor, and a subtle lift of spice, framed by supple tannins and restrained oak. It is both generous and composed, with a quiet power that speaks to its unique terroir and the Farr family’s deft touch in the cellar. A wine of fine structure and enduring freshness, it will evolve beautifully alongside roast duck or truffled mushroom dishes.

The By Farr winery, established by Gary Farr in 1994, has become one of the most prestigious names in Australian winemaking. Situated in the Geelong region, specifically in the Moorabool Valley, the winery is known for its meticulous, hands-off approach to winemaking. With a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic practices, By Farr is recognised for producing wines that are a true expression of their terroir, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Gary Farr, a pioneer of Pinot Noir in the region, has passed down his expertise to his son, Nick Farr, who has now fully taken the reins of the winery. Under Nick’s leadership, By Farr continues to produce exceptional wines that have garnered critical acclaim both in Australia and internationally. Each bottle of By Farr wine reflects the family’s dedication to craftsmanship, sustainability, and the pursuit of perfection in every vintage.
At By Farr, the philosophy is simple: respect for the land, the vine, and the fruit. This approach is grounded in a commitment to sustainable, organic farming practices, as well as hands-off winemaking that lets the terroir speak for itself. The Farr family believes that a great wine starts in the vineyard, with meticulous attention to detail paid to every aspect of vineyard management, from canopy care to harvest timing. Winemaking follows a minimalist approach, with native yeast fermentation, careful barrel selection, and the avoidance of fining and filtration, allowing each wine to evolve naturally and express its true character. This approach has resulted in wines that are elegant, structured, and complex, capturing the unique essence of the Geelong region.
