Tripel Karmeliet is a Belgian beer that is revered for its rich history, distinct flavour profile and exceptional craftsmanship. Brewed by Brouwerij Bosteels, this beer exemplifies the tradition and artistry of Belgian brewing. Dating back to 1679, Tripel Karmeliet takes its inspiration from a recipe discovered in the archives of a former Carmelite monastery in Dendermonde, Belgium. This historical connection adds a layer of mystique to the beer, making it a fascinating choice for beer enthusiasts. Brouwerij Bosteels is located in the small Belgian town of Buggenhout. The brewery has been in the hands of the Bosteels family for over 200 years, passing down their brewing expertise from generation to generation. Tripel Karmeliet is one of their most renowned creations, a beer that showcases their dedication to producing world-class brews. Tripel Karmeliet is classified as a Belgian Tripel, a style known for its strong, golden appearance and complex flavour profile. The beer pours a beautiful, hazy golden hue with a billowing white head that lingers enticingly in the glass. What sets Tripel Karmeliet apart is its unique recipe, which incorporates three types of grain: barley, wheat, and oats. This trio of grains imparts a smooth, velvety texture to the beer, contributing to its signature mouthfeel. Tripel Karmeliet is best enjoyed in a tulip-shaped glass, which helps concentrate the aromas and allows for an optimal tasting experience. The glass showcases the beer's golden hue, enticing the drinker to savour every sip.

At first sip, Tripel Karmeliet reveals a delightful combination of fruity esters, spicy notes, and a subtle sweetness. The beer's aroma is reminiscent of ripe bananas, cloves, and a hint of citrus, creating an inviting sensory experience. When pouring Tripel Karmeliet, one is immediately struck by its hazy golden appearance and a billowing white head that lingers atop the glass. The beer's enticing aroma hints at ripe bananas, cloves and a touch of citrus, inviting the drinker to take their first sip. Upon tasting Tripel Karmeliet, the complexity of flavors unfolds on the palate. Notes of honey, caramel and vanilla blend seamlessly with spicy clove, coriander and a subtle citrus zest. The beer's intricate character evolves with each sip, revealing new layers of flavour that captivate the senses. Despite its higher alcohol content, Tripel Karmeliet remains remarkably balanced and drinkable. The beer's effervescence and carbonation provide a refreshing quality that complements its robust flavors. It finishes with a gentle warmth, leaving a satisfying, lingering sensation. Tripel Karmeliet is best enjoyed in a tulip-shaped glass, allowing the aromas to be fully appreciated and enhancing the overall tasting experience.

A quirky take on a classic Belgian style, Tripel Karmeleit uses oats and wheat in addition to malted barley. Aromas of vanilla, Satsuma, and honey abound, all floating over soft, lightly sugary pilsner malt. Lee was surprised to find tart, almost wine-like notes in the nose, but truly enjoyed the “elegant interplay of dried orange peel and clover honey riding below the tart top notes.” While Pete also found honey notes, he likened the initial aromas to “orange blossom honey, laced with lemon zest,” and praised the nose’s gentle subtlety. Pushing down past the citrus fruit, Pete also detected hints of ripe peach and wildflowers. Topped by a mountainous, lingering, snow white head, this slightly hazy, citrine-colored brew is so highly carbonated it fairly leaps from the glass. Flavors of honey and ginger abound, tied together by faint notes of black pepper and vanilla. Tom felt the orange and lemon notes suffered from a bit too much honey on the palate, but noted the high carbonation kept the beer from being overly sweet. Rick, too, noted the dominating sweetness, yet found some “pleasant, spicy alcohol notes” to tame the sweetness a bit. Still, Rick felt the beer should have finished a touch drier. With its creamy finish and pronounced honey presence, this tripel diverges from the “classic” examples. But Tripel Karmaliet is eminently quaffable as many devotees can attest. - The Beer Connoisseur, 90 Points
