The Brian Hirst Signature V Decanter is a functional work of art, designed and hand-blown by one of Australia's leading figures in the Studio Art Glass movement. Emerging from a tradition established in the early 1970s, Brian Hirst has spent more than four decades refining his craft, moving away from mould-blown production to create each decanter entirely free-blown. This meticulous approach ensures every piece is individually formed, with subtle variations in shape and proportion that make no two decanters exactly alike.
Designed to accommodate a standard 750ml bottle of wine, the Signature V Decanter pairs sculptural elegance with everyday functionality. Each piece is hand finished using traditional glassworking tools from Murano, following the Muranese tradition of individually finishing every work. Fine tool marks around the neck and rim, together with the occasional small air bubble, are natural characteristics of the handcrafting process and a hallmark of authentic studio glass. Produced in limited numbers and made to order, every decanter is engraved by Brian Hirst with its capacity, design name and his signature, affirming its provenance as an original piece of Australian studio art glass.
Please note that, due to the handmade nature of each decanter, slight variations in shape, finish and detail are to be expected. These individual characteristics are an inherent part of the craftsmanship and contribute to the unique character of every piece.

Brian Hirst is one of Australia’s most respected studio glass artists, celebrated for his handcrafted decanters and sculptural glass creations that seamlessly merge artistic expression with functional design. Based in Sydney, Hirst has spent decades refining his craft, earning recognition for his exceptional skill in hand-blown glassmaking and his distinctive contemporary aesthetic. Each piece produced under the Brian Hirst name reflects a deeply personal approach to craftsmanship, with every decanter individually shaped, balanced, and finished by hand rather than through industrial production methods. His Signature collection, including the renowned coloured decanters, has become particularly admired among wine collectors, sommeliers, and luxury hospitality venues for its sculptural elegance and refined practicality.
Drawing inspiration from the fluidity of wine itself, Hirst approaches glass as a living medium capable of capturing movement, light, and emotion. His works are characterized by clean architectural lines, organic curves, and a sophisticated interplay of transparency and colour. Unlike mass-produced crystalware, every Brian Hirst decanter carries subtle individual nuances that reflect the artisan’s direct involvement in the creative process. Over the years, his glassware has earned a reputation for elevating the ritual of wine service while also standing as collectible contemporary art objects in their own right. Through a commitment to meticulous craftsmanship and timeless design, Brian Hirst continues to represent the highest level of Australian artisanal glassmaking.
The philosophy behind Brian Hirst’s work is centered on the belief that functional objects should also possess artistic beauty, emotional resonance, and enduring craftsmanship. Rather than viewing glassware as purely utilitarian, Hirst approaches every decanter as a sculptural form designed to enhance both the visual and sensory experience of wine. His creations are intended to celebrate ritual, encouraging a slower and more mindful appreciation of wine, hospitality, and shared moments around the table. Central to this philosophy is the importance of handmade craftsmanship, with each piece individually blown and shaped to preserve authenticity, uniqueness, and human touch.
Brian Hirst also believes strongly in the relationship between light, movement, and transparency, elements that play a defining role throughout his work. The flowing contours and coloured accents found in his decanters are carefully considered to create visual harmony while complementing the colour and texture of the wine itself. Simplicity remains a guiding principle in his designs, where elegance is achieved not through excess ornamentation, but through proportion, balance, and purity of form. Sustainability and longevity are equally important values, with Hirst producing timeless pieces intended to be treasured and used for generations rather than treated as disposable luxury items. Ultimately, his philosophy reflects a dedication to creating objects that unite artistry, functionality, and emotional connection, transforming everyday wine service into a refined and memorable experience.
