This year’s blend was drawn for the Benjamin Leroux Volnay 2017 is mostly from Les Grand Champs, a site abutting the 1er Cru belt that lies below the village, between Les Mitans and the D974. To this parcel Leroux married a few barrels of 1er Cru La Gigotte, which lies directly south. Looking forward, the 2018 includes some Carelles, which again lies directly south of Gigotte. Leroux getting his ducks in a row. Across the blend, just 10% new oak and roughly the same percentage of whole bunches were employed this year. This has a supple and flowing palate of red fruit, with fine energy and tender Volnay tannins. A very impressive run out for this core release. So perfumed, with raspberry and red roses to the fore, a silky core of fruit, just enough powdery tannins and a long sappy close.
