Product Description:
Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2024 is a finely structured expression of cool-climate Pinot Noir from one of Gippsland’s most celebrated estates. The wine is produced from Bass Phillip’s original Estate vineyard near Leongatha, a densely planted site established in 1979. The Estate, Premium and Reserve Pinot Noirs are drawn from designated rows and subplots within this historic vineyard, with each tier vinified separately according to the character and quality of its fruit. The vineyard’s silty loam and clay soils lie over volcanic bedrock and are cultivated without irrigation, reflecting the naturally cool and comparatively moist conditions of southern Gippsland. Its proximity to the Bass Strait moderates seasonal temperatures, helping the grapes retain natural acidity while developing aromatic and flavour intensity. Since 2020, Bass Phillip has been led by Burgundian winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier, who has sought to preserve the estate’s identity while gradually refining its viticulture and winemaking. The 2024 release is presented as a fragrant and classically proportioned Pinot Noir, combining expressive fruit with considerable underlying structure. Bottled at 13.7% alcohol under cork, it is a serious yet balanced wine with the concentration and tannin profile required for medium-term cellaring.
The bouquet presents a fragrant potpourri of rose petals, red berries and a subtle suggestion of China tea. These lifted floral and fruit notes give the wine an immediately recognisable Pinot Noir character. The palate follows with a lush, fruit-driven centre framed by fine, powdery tannins. Its combination of delicacy and firmness reflects the producer’s description of an iron fist in a velvet glove. Red fruit and savoury earth are supported by fresh acidity, bringing energy and definition to the wine’s concentrated core. Although aromatic and charming in its youth, the structure remains tightly composed and should become increasingly expressive with bottle age. The finish is persistent and delicately spiced, leaving impressions of red fruit, liquorice root and fine-grained tannin. This is a poised Gippsland Pinot Noir that combines floral perfume, natural freshness and restrained power.
