The Bass Phillip Estate Chardonnay 2024 is a concentrated and finely structured South Gippsland Chardonnay from one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate estates. Bass Phillip was established in 1979 and has long specialised in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with its original vineyard replanted primarily to these two Burgundian varieties during the mid-1980s. The estate’s vineyards have been managed organically since 1993 and biodynamically since 2002, reflecting a philosophy centred on natural balance and minimal intervention. No irrigation is employed, while low cropping and dense vineyard planting are used to build flavour intensity, texture and mineral expression. South Gippsland’s deep, mineral-rich soils, natural humidity, reliable rainfall and cooling maritime influence contribute freshness and length to the finished wines.

In the winery, Bass Phillip favours natural yeast, limited pumping, minimal racking and restrained additions, allowing the vineyard character to remain at the centre of the wine. Fining agents are not used, and the estate states that its white wines are generally matured in oak for approximately twelve to fifteen months. The 2024 Estate Chardonnay presents a generous core of ripe orchard and stone fruit, supported by citrus detail and integrated French oak. Despite its concentration, the wine retains freshness and energy through a measured line of acidity. Its youthful structure suggests that further complexity will emerge with careful bottle maturation. The balance of richness, freshness and sustained flavour makes it an excellent companion to roast chicken, grilled seafood, butter-poached lobster, creamy pasta and mature soft cheeses.

      Trusted by the professionals

The 2024 Bass Phillip Estate Chardonnay is impressive delivering a powerful and exotic blend of nectarine and brown pear aromas with a nice touch of orange peel wrapped up in a cocoon of high quality French oak. Quite densely flavoured yet remains light on its feet thanks to a gentle bite of acidity which holds through to a finish of extreme length. Quite tight and yet to flower but its future is assured.

      Bass Phillip

The story of Bass Phillip began in the early 1970s when the first vineyard site was selected 15 kilometres south of Leongatha, based on climatic and topographical observations. The location benefits from South Gippsland's unique conditions—mountains to the north and the ocean to the south—creating the ideal environment for slow grape ripening. In 1998, a 7.5-hectare vineyard was planted in Leongatha’s hinterland, primarily featuring Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with small plantings of Gewurztraminer and Nebbiolo. Together, these plantings total over 10 hectares of closely managed, low-yielding vines that produce wines with depth, length, and complexity.

Bass Phillip has embraced organic practices since 1993 and biodynamic farming since 2002. The vineyard's natural processes, including no irrigation and meticulous canopy management, allow the terroir to shine in the wines. The deep, mineral-rich soils combined with South Gippsland's climate contribute to the unique flavour profile of Bass Phillip’s wines, which are made using minimal intervention and traditional winemaking methods. Founder Phillip Jones spent years refining his craft before entering the Australian market, where his Pinot Noirs have earned top accolades from both local and international critics. Today, Bass Phillip’s Pinot Noirs are among Australia’s most sought-after, sold on allocation and rarely seen on the secondary market.
