An ultra-rare, old-vine Eden Valley Shiraz built for decades of graceful ageing. From a 91-year-old vineyard perched on the crest of Mengler’s Hill — one of the highest points in Australian viticulture — the 2019 Barr-Eden Estate Love Over Gold Shiraz is a statement of patience, precision and place.
Hand-picked on 27 March 2018 in small 20kg baskets, the fruit underwent meticulous hand-destemming with only perfect berries making it into the ferment. Ten percent whole bunch was included, with gentle pigeage twice daily during a cool natural fermentation at 24°C. After 24 days on skins, the free-run wine was drained to a two-year-old, extra-tight-grain French puncheon for maturation.
The result is a wine of incredible concentration and structure — coating tannins, a core of ripe yet defined fruit, and remarkable length. With an ageing potential of 20–25 years, this is a wine for the cellar, but it can be enjoyed young with a long decant.

Blackberry, blackcurrant, a mint and sage perfume, baking spices, and a little truffle-like earthiness. It’s medium to full-bodied, a sweet and earthy uptake of concentrated black fruit, tannin is thick and sooty, but slightly drying, and there’s some black tea and black olive in the mix too, with a finish of weight and depth. It’s maybe a bit squishy and malty, but has plenty of Eden Shiraz character.
Barr-Eden Estate sits high on Mengler’s Hill, spanning 130 acres across Eden Valley and the Barossa Valley. The site’s elevation, ranging from 465 to 545 metres, gives it a unique vantage point over South Australia’s most celebrated wine country.
The land’s story stretches back to 1858, when the Polhner family settled the original 4,000-acre property. After nearly 150 years under their stewardship, it was purchased in 1997 by the late Bob McLean, a much-loved figure in the Australian wine industry. In 2014, Barossa grape grower Joel Mattschoss secured fruit from the estate, sharing it with Pierre-Henri Morel, a French winemaker newly arrived from the Northern Rhône. The two recognised the fruit’s character and vinified it with care, beginning the foundation of what would become Barr-Eden.
Following McLean’s passing, Mattschoss, Morel, and close friends Michael Twelftree and Tim Hower took on custodianship of the vineyard. In 2023, Morel and Twelftree became sole custodians, continuing the estate’s modern chapter while honouring its long legacy.
Barr-Eden Estate is defined by its elevation, its soils, and the patient hands that guide it. Vines are cultivated on land once rich in goldfields, with every bunch hand harvested at optimum ripeness to preserve purity and structure. Loose clusters and naturally balanced fruit are hallmarks of the site, offering complexity that speaks clearly of its terroir.
The estate’s approach values detail and restraint. Each bunch is hand picked into small trays, ensuring berries remain intact, then carefully sorted before fermentation. This hands-on precision reflects the belief that great wines come from attentive farming, not intervention. The custodians of Barr-Eden see themselves as caretakers of both land and history, shaping wines that respect provenance and reflect the estate’s singular place between Barossa and Eden.
