Bannockburn Grigsby Chardonnay 2021
Bannockburn Vineyards' commitment to quality drives everything they do, from the vineyard to the bottle. All Bannockburn wines are made from fruit grown on their long-established estate in the Geelong wine region. The meticulously tended vineyards and the hands-off approach by winemaker Matt Holmes result in wines that are exciting, complex and uniquely Bannockburn.
This is the first single vineyard release from Bannockburn’s close-planted, certified organic Chardonnay block. It’s Bernard clone 76, planted to 1.2m rows with 1.0m vine spacing, on a north-south row exposition. The soils are comprised of dark cracking clay over weathered basalt and limestone. For the 2021, a small yield of excellent quality fruit was picked, whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight before being racked to two second-year French oak hogsheads for wild fermentation. One barrel went through malo and the wine spent 11 months on lees with minimal stirring.
Named in honour of veteran viticulturist Lucas Grigsby, this is the first release from Bannockburn's close-planted chardonnay block. Well-composed and compact, Grisgby combines a creamy textural mouthfeel with a world of intense citrus, nectarine and almond skin with a clean cut of tart quince to finish. Works the tastebuds in all directions before closing in tight and long. - Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion, 95 Points
