The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the internal name given to the project when development first began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a ‘trial’, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its has a fleshy and opulent style, contrasting with Grange, which is more assertive and muscular. RWT is produce from fruit primarily selected for its plush texture and aromatic qualities. The resulting wine helping to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level. RWT wines area built for the long haul, with the precision, concentration and balance to age for many years.
Above average winter rainfall led into a promising vintage, which was characterised by mild conditions up until February, followed by hot weather conditions throughout March and April. South Australia fared well and produced wines of elegance and intensity.
The palate is at once opulent, juicy and mouthwatering - a compote of assorted berries (red and blue), Satsuma plum and cherry. Dark pepper spices adorn the back palate, and the tannins are engulfed by the above-mentioned fruit rush. The fruit sits effortlessly in 69% new oak, adding another dimension to the structural and flavour layers. This is as impressive an RWT as that from the 2002 vintage - each sip (glass?) is better than the one before.
